Epic Universe has only been open a short time, but Universal may already be planning what’s next.

Dark Universe

Newly filed construction documents suggest Universal Orlando Resort is preparing a major expansion inside Dark Universe at Epic Universe. While Universal has not officially announced a new attraction, a recently filed permit provides the clearest indication yet that something significant is in the works.

According to the permit, Universal has filed for a new construction project totaling approximately 71,500 square feet, with Stantec Architecture, LTD listed as the contractor. To put that into perspective, the proposed building is roughly the same size as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The permit itself does not identify what type of attraction will occupy the building. However, previous Epic Universe concept art showed a large enclosed structure planned for Dark Universe that ultimately did not open with the park. The location of the newly filed project closely matches where that building appeared in the original artwork, leading to speculation that Universal may finally be moving forward with those plans.

Earlier this year, Universal also filed, and later refiled, permits referencing “Project 680,” described as mass grading, utility connections, and rerouted infrastructure for a future attraction. The latest filing appears to be another step forward for that same project, suggesting preparations are continuing behind the scenes.

At this point, there’s no confirmation whether the new structure will house a new ride, live show, walkthrough experience, or another major offering. Universal executives have previously hinted that Epic Universe has room to grow, though the company has stopped short of announcing any official expansions.

Dark Universe

Dark Universe is currently home to attractions including Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and Curse of the Werewolf, along with themed dining, shopping, and character encounters centered around Universal’s classic monsters. A large new addition would further expand one of Epic Universe’s most immersive lands.

For now, Universal is keeping quiet about exactly what’s planned, but the size of this latest permit makes one thing clear: Epic Universe may already be preparing for its first major expansion.
