Epic Universe has only just opened, but Universal fans are already watching for signs of what’s coming next.

Dark Universe

Theme park fans know some of the biggest announcements don’t start with a press release. They start with permits.

That’s exactly why a recently resurfaced permit tied to a “future attraction” at Universal Epic Universe is getting so much attention. The permit originally appeared earlier this year, disappeared shortly afterward, and has now returned with new details that could point toward one of the park’s most popular lands.

And if those clues are correct, Dark Universe may already be preparing for something new.

The Mysterious Permit Has Returned

Back in March, Universal Orlando Resort filed a permit for site work connected to a “future attraction” at Epic Universe. The filing was associated with Permit #B26901713 and described the project as:

Mass grading, utility points of connection, and re-routes for early work purposes of a future attraction known as Project 680.

Not long after the permit appeared, it was removed from public records, leading many fans to wonder whether the project had been delayed, canceled, or simply filed prematurely.

Now the permit has resurfaced, and it includes an important new detail.

New Building Number May Point to Dark Universe

According to the updated permit information, the future building connected to Project 680 is identified as Building 1570.

Curse of the Werewolf

Why does that matter?

Because buildings within Dark Universe use 15xx numbering conventions, the newly revealed building designation falls directly within that numbering range. Further, Building 1560 is associated with Curse of the Werewolf, one of the attractions currently operating in Dark Universe.

Ride vehicles

That doesn’t confirm a new Dark Universe ride. But it does provide the strongest clue yet that the project may be located within that land.

What Is Project 680?

That’s the million-dollar question!

At this point, Universal has not publicly explained what Project 680 actually is. The permit only references site work and infrastructure preparations for a future attraction. No ride type, storyline, technology, or opening timeline has been revealed.

However, the repeated appearance of Project 680 in permit filings suggests that it is a legitimate future development project rather than a routine maintenance effort.

The site work described in the permit includes grading and utility connections, which are often among the earliest stages of major construction projects.

Universal Has Hinted at Future Epic Universe Growth

Although Universal has not officially announced a new Dark Universe attraction, company executives have repeatedly hinted that Epic Universe was designed with room to grow. Universal leadership has teased future expansion opportunities for the park, even while avoiding the specific word “expansion” in official communications.

That makes permits like this especially interesting.

Epic Universe was built with significant expansion plots surrounding several of its lands, and fans have been closely monitoring permit activity since before the park opened.

Dark Universe Seems Like a Logical Candidate

If the permit does ultimately connect to Dark Universe, it would make sense.

The land has quickly become one of the standout experiences at Epic Universe thanks to its immersive Darkmoor Village setting, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, Curse of the Werewolf, and the broader Universal Monsters mythology woven throughout the area.

Adding another attraction could further expand the land’s story and capacity, although it is important to emphasize that Universal has not announced any such plans. Right now, fans are connecting permit clues — not official announcements.

Another Epic Universe Expansion May Already Be in the Works

Interestingly, Dark Universe isn’t the only Epic Universe land that has appeared in expansion discussions.

Separate permit activity has also suggested future growth for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic. Other reports have identified expansion-related filings connected to that area as well.

In other words, Universal may already be laying the groundwork for what comes next at its newest theme park.

What Project 680 ultimately becomes remains a mystery. It could be a new attraction. It could be an expansion. It could be something entirely different.
