Wait…is it finally happening?!

A major piece of Epic Universe tech may be getting closer to its debut. According to new aerial photos, a flying dragon drone has been spotted backstage once again at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe, marking the first sighting in a while, and sparking major excitement among fans.
This isn’t just any prop — this is the same highly anticipated dragon drone tied to the How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk land.
If you’ve been following Epic Universe updates, you already know this dragon has been one of the most talked-about elements of the park.

Originally teased as a free-flying, lifelike dragon soaring above the land, the drone was expected to be a groundbreaking addition, but it hasn’t officially debuted yet.
Behind the scenes, the technology has faced some major challenges, including making the dragon’s movement feel realistic, reducing noise levels (reportedly as loud as a helicopter), and ensuring safe, untethered flight in a guest environment.
Because of that, the dragons were noticeably absent when Epic Universe first opened, despite early testing sightings.
Now that the dragon drone has been spotted again backstage, it’s a strong signal that testing and development are still very much ongoing.
And more importantly… it could mean we’re getting closer to seeing these dragons actually take flight inside the park.
If (and when) they debut, they’re expected to fly over the Isle of Berk land, be visible from multiple areas, and add a completely new level of immersion to the environment. This isn’t just a cool visual — it’s something we’ve never really seen executed at this scale in a theme park before!
Universal is essentially trying to bring fully flying creatures into a themed land in real time, which would be a huge leap forward in live theme park entertainment.
For now, it’s still behind the scenes, but this latest sighting is the clearest sign yet that the dragons haven’t been scrapped.
Stay tuned, because the moment these take to the skies at Epic Universe, it’s going to be one of the biggest theme park moments of the year!
