Disney has released its latest novelty trash can-inspired candy container, and this time it’s themed to “it’s a small world,”
…giving longtime collectors of these quirky little tins a new design to track down.
If the phrase “novelty trash can” made you pause, you’re not alone, but stick with me, because this one’s actually pretty charming once you know the backstory.
The new container was spotted at Zuri’s Sweets Shop in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, though it will likely show up at other bulk candy locations across Walt Disney World too. Like the classic Disney Parks trash cans these tins are modeled after, it features flap-style openings on two sides, with a light blue color scheme layered over blue, pink, and brown designs pulled straight from “it’s a small world’s” distinctive art style. The ride’s name is printed on those same flap sides, while the remaining two sides carry floral and geometric patterns, all finished off with white trim. To get one, guests need to purchase at least a half pound of bulk candy and bring the bag to a Cast Member, who’ll confirm the weight and price before adding the container.
The joke behind these containers is better than it sounds on paper. Disney’s actual trash cans scattered throughout the parks have quietly become a beloved bit of park trivia over the years, largely because longtime fans love pointing out how cleverly Imagineers disguise and theme them to match whatever land they’re sitting in. Turning that same design language into a candy container is a wink at guests who already notice these details, and it’s part of a small but growing collectible line: previous novelty trash can containers have been themed to Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.
There’s a little bit of bittersweet timing built into this release too. Disney has been gradually replacing its classic trash cans throughout the parks with newer solar-powered models, so these candy tins are doubling as a fun way to preserve the look of the originals even as the real versions slowly disappear from the parks themselves.
“it’s a small world” has had a genuinely busy year for merchandise beyond just this container. The attraction has picked up its own popcorn buckets at other Disney parks around the world over the years, along with Wishables, board games, and other collectibles, so this trash can slots into an already active lineup for one of Disney’s most enduring attractions rather than standing entirely on its own.
