Disney’s Animal Kingdom just welcomed a new pack member, and honestly, those ears alone are enough to make him an instant favorite!
Say hello to Prospect, the newest African painted dog to join the savanna.
Disney shared the introduction on social media, and based on the photos, Prospect is already settling in like he’s been there for years — striking a confident pose on the rocks, wading into the watering hole, and generally looking right at home among the grasses and boulders of his new habitat. African painted dogs (also known as African wild dogs) are instantly recognizable thanks to those oversized, rounded ears and their distinctive mottled coats, where no two individuals share quite the same pattern, which makes Prospect’s blend of black, tan, and white markings genuinely one of a kind.
For anyone who hasn’t spent much time with this species: African painted dogs are highly social animals that live and hunt in tightly bonded packs, relying on cooperation and communication to survive across the African savanna. They’re also one of the more endangered large carnivores on the continent, which makes every new addition (especially a male joining an existing pack structure) a meaningful moment for conservation-focused facilities like Animal Kingdom.
No word yet on where Prospect came from or what his integration timeline with the rest of the pack looks like, but based on how at-ease he already appears in these photos, it sounds like things are off to a good start.
