Heading to Walt Disney World in September? Before you start locking in those park-day plans, there are a few closures you’ll want to know about.

September can be a great time to visit Walt Disney World, but like any month, scheduled refurbishments and temporary attraction closures can change what you’ll be able to experience during your trip.

The good news? The September 2026 closure list is actually relatively short.

Despite the massive amount of construction happening across Walt Disney World right now, only a handful of attractions are currently expected to be unavailable during September. The biggest impact actually comes outside the four main theme parks, where an entire Disney water park will close for the season.

Here’s what you need to know before you go.

Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress

One of Magic Kingdom’s most historic attractions will remain unavailable throughout September.

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress closed July 5, 2026, beginning an extensive transformation that will keep the Tomorrowland attraction closed well beyond the end of the month. Disney currently lists the attraction as temporarily unavailable for refurbishment.

And this isn’t a routine refurbishment.

When Carousel of Progress reopens in late spring 2027, guests will experience a substantially updated version of the attraction with a reworked timeline and new scenes.

The four acts will move through the 1960s, 1980s, turn of the century, and a vision of the possible future, replacing the eras represented in the previous version of the show.

Disney is also making a particularly historic addition: Walt Disney himself will be represented as an Audio-Animatronic figure in the updated attraction.

That makes this closure considerably different from Disney taking a ride offline for routine maintenance. Carousel of Progress is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in its history, so guests visiting Magic Kingdom throughout the remainder of 2026 should plan on skipping it entirely.

For September visitors, the good news is that this is currently the primary scheduled attraction refurbishment you’ll need to account for at Magic Kingdom.

Of course, the park itself is undergoing an enormous transformation. Construction continues around Frontierland as Disney prepares for Piston Peak National Park, while work connected to the future Villains Land is also reshaping areas beyond the existing park.

Those projects can affect pathways, sightlines, and the overall atmosphere around portions of Magic Kingdom even when nearby attractions remain operational.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Vacation Fun

Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Vacation Fun remains temporarily unavailable inside the Mickey Shorts Theater.

The short film starring Mickey and Minnie temporarily closed on August 9, and the theater is currently serving a completely different purpose: Annual Passholder magnet distribution.

Disney has not currently published additional showtimes for Vacation Fun through the remainder of its operating calendar, and a reopening date has not been announced.

This closure is unlikely to dramatically change most Hollywood Studios touring plans, especially compared with losing one of the park’s major rides, but it’s still worth knowing about if Vacation Fun was on your list.

The bigger story at Hollywood Studios continues to be the park’s transformation.

Large portions of the former Animation Courtyard area have undergone redevelopment, while work continues elsewhere as Disney prepares for Monstropolis, the future Monsters, Inc.-themed land.

Meanwhile, September will also bring something new to the park rather than another closure: The Magic of Disney Animation opens September 14, 2026.

That means guests visiting during the second half of the month will actually have a brand-new experience to add to their Hollywood Studios plans.

Typhoon Lagoon Closes September 9

Here’s the closure that could have the biggest effect on September vacation plans. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park will close for the season beginning September 9, 2026.

That means every attraction inside Typhoon Lagoon becomes unavailable once the park closes, including its collection of slides, raft rides, children’s areas, lazy river, and enormous wave pool. This follows an unusual summer at Walt Disney World in which Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach operated simultaneously.

Having both Disney World water parks available at the same time was particularly useful in 2026 because Disney once again offered eligible Disney Resort hotel guests complimentary water park admission on their check-in day.

Once Typhoon Lagoon closes September 9, Blizzard Beach becomes the available Disney water park, weather permitting.

That’s an important distinction for anyone building a September itinerary around a water park day.

If Typhoon Lagoon is a must-do, you’ll need to visit during the first portion of the month. Guests arriving September 9 or later should instead plan around Blizzard Beach.

And because Central Florida weather can still be extremely hot in September, losing Typhoon Lagoon doesn’t necessarily mean water park season feels like it’s over. This is a seasonal operating change rather than an indication that Orlando’s summer temperatures have disappeared.

What About EPCOT and Animal Kingdom?

Here’s some particularly good news.

The current September closure list does not identify a scheduled ride refurbishment at EPCOT or Disney’s Animal Kingdom comparable to Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom.

That doesn’t mean every attraction is guaranteed to operate continuously throughout your vacation. Disney attractions can always experience temporary downtime caused by technical issues, weather, or other operational circumstances.

Disney itself recommends checking its park-hours calendar, individual attraction pages, the My Disney Experience app, and in-park information for the latest operational status.

Animal Kingdom is also in the middle of one of the biggest transformations in the park’s history as Disney prepares the former DinoLand U.S.A. area for Tropical Americas.

So while there may not be a long September refurbishment list, Disney World as a whole is very much in a transitional period.

What September Guests Should Actually Do

If you’re visiting Walt Disney World in September, the biggest takeaway is pretty simple: you don’t need to overhaul your vacation because of this closure list.

Carousel of Progress is a long-term closure that can’t realistically be planned around unless you postpone your trip until 2027, while Vacation Fun is a comparatively minor attraction closure. Typhoon Lagoon is the one that requires a little more attention.

Anyone visiting during the first eight days of September still has the opportunity to include Typhoon Lagoon in their vacation. Guests arriving later should build any planned water park time around Blizzard Beach instead.

September visitors should also keep checking Disney’s official operating calendar as their trip approaches. Refurbishment schedules can change, reopening dates can shift, and additional temporary closures can always be announced.

But based on the currently published schedule, September 2026 is shaping up to have relatively strong attraction availability across Disney World’s four main theme parks.

That’s especially notable considering just how much is changing around the resort.

Magic Kingdom is preparing for Piston Peak and Villains Land. Hollywood Studios is transforming with The Magic of Disney Animation and Monstropolis. Animal Kingdom is building toward Tropical Americas.

For a resort undergoing that much construction, having such a small scheduled ride-closure list isn’t a bad situation for September vacationers. Just remember that Disney’s operational calendar can change, so checking again shortly before (and during) your vacation is always the safest bet.
