If you’ve ever had a nightmare about clowns, we’ve got some bad news for you…
…Universal just made it real!
Halloween Horror Nights 35 has officially confirmed Downtown Clown Town, and it might be the most clown-packed scarezone the event has EVER produced. We’re talking two separately licensed horror franchises sharing the same street for the first time in HHN history.
Downtown Clown Town takes over the New York section of Universal Studios Florida for Halloween Horror Nights 35, which runs select nights from August 28 through November 1, 2026. It was confirmed as the fourth and final scarezone announced for the Orlando lineup, joining Infernal Carnival of Nightmares, Sideshow of Decay, and Fortnitemares.
One more thing…this one is Orlando-exclusive. Universal Studios Hollywood’s HHN event isn’t getting Downtown Clown Town.
Universal’s own description paints New York as a city that’s been completely overrun after dark, with clownsfolk taking over its streets and hunting down anyone who crosses their path. It’s a simple, effective setup: don’t be fooled by the friendly-looking locals, because none of them are interested in making you laugh.
Interestingly, this announcement didn’t come with the typical formal press release treatment — Universal dropped it quietly through the official Halloween Horror Nights Orlando social channels and blog, the same low-key rollout Sideshow of Decay got earlier in the summer (Fortnitemares, by comparison, got a full bilingual press release).
Meet the Headliners: Killer Klowns From Outer Space
The Killer Klowns from Outer Space are one of the two major horror IPs anchoring this zone, and they’re bringing some serious HHN history with them. The franchise originates from the 1988 cult classic film of the same name, which imagines alien invaders who look (and act) like a twisted circus troupe, complete with cotton-candy cocoons and popcorn guns.
This isn’t the Killer Klowns’ first trip to Horror Nights, either. They actually debuted as their own standalone scarezone back in 2018, then “graduated” into a full haunted house in 2019. Landing back in a scarezone for HHN 35 is being treated as something of a homecoming, just with a much bloodier new roommate this time around.
Meet the Headliners: Art the Clown
The second major name in Downtown Clown Town is Art the Clown, the silent, sadistic killer from the Terrifier franchise who has become one of modern horror’s most recognizable new icons. Art made his HHN debut in 2025, appearing both inside a dedicated Terrifier haunted house and as a roaming scare character throughout the event. For HHN 35, he’s back…and this time he’s sharing a street with an entirely different breed of clown chaos!
Where the Killer Klowns bring campy, over-the-top alien invasion energy, Art the Clown is known for his unpredictable, brutally violent methods and complete lack of showmanship. Pairing the two side by side gives this scarezone a real tonal whiplash — which honestly sounds like exactly what Universal was going for.
“Distinct Boroughs” and the Mystery Clowns
According to Ramon Paradoa, Show Director of Creative Development for Halloween Horror Nights, Downtown Clown Town is being built out with distinct boroughs, each one populated by a different flavor of clown: familiar faces from HHN’s past, brand-new original characters created just for this zone, Killer Klowns, Art the Clown, and (in his words) “clowns yet to be revealed.”
That last part has fans buzzing. Universal hadn’t confirmed the full lineup of characters who’ll appear in the zone, and the open-ended wording of the announcement has left plenty of room for speculation. Some fans are hoping original HHN clown icons like Jack the Clown or Chance could make an appearance, while others are holding out hope for classic HHN characters like the Treaks and Foons. While non of that was previously confirmed, given how much the rest of HHN 35 is leaning into its own history (Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow are literally co-headlining the whole event this year), it’s wasn’t a wild guess…and fans didn’t have to walk away disappointed during previews!
Downtown Clown Town isn’t happening in a vacuum — it’s the exclamation point on what’s shaping up to be a full-blown clown-obsessed year for Halloween Horror Nights. The event’s overarching 35th anniversary theme, Infernal Carnival of Nightmares, already centers on Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow teaming up for the first time ever, complete with a matching haunted house and its own scarezone. Add in Downtown Clown Town, and HHN 35 is putting more painted faces on its streets than perhaps any year in the event’s history.
