The Simpsons Movie sequel finally got some real news at D23, and it turns out we’ve been calling it the wrong thing this whole time.
It’s officially titled The New Simpsons Movie.
Disney unveiled the new logo and title at the film’s D23 pavilion, alongside a poster confirming the release date: September 3, 2027. Honestly, the title change tracks. “The Simpsons Movie 2” always felt like a slightly awkward fit for a franchise that’s spent decades poking fun at lazy sequel logic, and The New Simpsons Movie reads a lot more like the kind of self-aware joke the writers would actually make. Whether it sticks all the way to release is anyone’s guess, since studios have walked back D23 branding before, but for now, that’s the name.
As for the release date itself, this confirms the shift that was first announced back in December, when the film moved off its original July 23, 2027 date (which would have marked an exact 20-year anniversary of the first movie) to a new “Labor D’oh Weekend” slot on September 3.
We also got our first actual footage from the film, which the studio itself described as “rough,” though Bart apparently insisted on showing it anyway (love that for him). The clip features Homer at a Springfield Isotopes baseball game, loudly demanding the universe “make me rich, make Homer rich” while trying to catch a foul ball — an attempt that predictably spirals into total chaos, with multiple Springfield characters toppling over each other trying to grab it too. So, business as usual for Homer, really.
Beyond the title, date, and that one chaotic clip, plot details are still being kept firmly under wraps. Matt Groening wrote the screenplay and is producing alongside Al Jean, Richard Sakai, Mike Scully, and James L. Brooks, and the voice cast is expected to return, though only a few names have been confirmed publicly so far.
Twenty years after the original became a $536 million global hit, it sounds like Disney and 20th Century Studios are finally ready to bring Springfield back to the big screen — even if they’re still keeping most of it under wraps for now.
