To me, my X-Men! After years of waiting, Marvel Studios has FINALLY introduced the mutants who will lead the X-Men into a brand-new era of the MCU.

Marvel Studios delivered one of its biggest announcements of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, officially revealing the principal cast of its upcoming live-action X-Men movie, and there are some BIG names joining the team!

We finally know who will play Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue, and Emma Frost, while Marvel also confirmed the villain waiting for them: Mister Sinister, played by Adam Driver.

And that’s not all.

Marvel also revealed when we’ll finally see its new generation of mutants on the big screen.

Meet Marvel’s NEW X-Men

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige took the stage during the D23 Disney Entertainment Showcase to officially introduce the cast that will bring the X-Men into the MCU.

Here’s the lineup revealed so far:

  • Christopher Abbott — Charles Xavier/Professor X
  • Kit Connor — Scott Summers/Cyclops
  • Sadie Sink — Jean Grey
  • Maya Boyd — Ororo Munroe/Storm
  • Inde Navarrette — Rogue
  • Samara Weaving — Emma Frost
  • Adam Driver — Nathaniel Essex/Mister Sinister

It’s a completely new generation of actors taking over some of Marvel’s most recognizable mutant roles, many of which were previously portrayed for decades throughout 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.

And while the heroes themselves are obviously a pretty big deal, Marvel’s choice of villain might be just as interesting.

Adam Driver Is Playing Mister Sinister

Yep. Adam Driver is officially joining the MCU, and he’s not playing an X-Man. Driver will portray Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister, in the upcoming film.

For comic book fans, that’s a pretty significant choice for the X-Men’s first major MCU adventure.

Mister Sinister is a geneticist obsessed with mutation, evolution, and manipulating mutant DNA. His history is particularly intertwined with Cyclops and Jean Grey, which makes the confirmed inclusion of both characters in this new lineup even more interesting.

Exactly what Marvel plans to do with Essex hasn’t been revealed, so we won’t get ahead of ourselves on the story.

But after years of Magneto serving as the central antagonist—or reluctant ally—across much of Fox’s X-Men franchise, choosing Mister Sinister immediately gives Marvel Studios an opportunity to tell a very different kind of X-Men story.

Sadie Sink Is Jean Grey

We also finally have confirmation surrounding Sadie Sink. The Stranger Things star will officially portray Jean Grey in Marvel Studios’ X-Men.

Sink’s involvement with Marvel had been the subject of speculation for quite some time, but D23 has now removed the mystery surrounding her X-Men role.

She’ll be joined by Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops, putting two of the most important characters in X-Men history at the center of Marvel’s new mutant lineup.

Jean has previously been portrayed on the big screen by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner, while Cyclops was played by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan in Fox’s different generations of X-Men films.

This time, Sink and Connor get to establish entirely new versions of the characters specifically for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Professor X Has a New Face, Too

Marvel also revealed who will inherit one of the franchise’s most iconic roles: Christopher Abbott will play Charles Xavier/Professor X.

Patrick Stewart famously originated the live-action role in 2000’s X-Men and has continued appearing as versions of Xavier across both the Fox franchise and the MCU.

James McAvoy later portrayed a younger Charles Xavier beginning with X-Men: First Class.Abbott will now become the latest actor to take on the role as Marvel establishes its own core generation of X-Men.

And he’ll have quite the group of students (or teammates) to bring together.

Storm, Rogue, and Emma Frost Are Joining the Team

D23 also answered several other major casting questions. Maya Boyd will portray Storm, while Inde Navarrette will play Rogue.

Meanwhile, Samara Weaving will portray Emma Frost, giving the new film another incredibly important…and sometimes complicated…figure from X-Men history.

What Disney hasn’t revealed yet is exactly how all of these characters fit together.

We don’t know whether we’re meeting an already-established X-Men team or watching Xavier assemble his mutants for the first time. We also don’t know what role Emma Frost will play in that dynamic.

Those are details Marvel is keeping secret for now.

‘Thunderbolts*’ Director Jake Schreier Is Taking Over the X-Men

The new cast won’t be the only thing separating this movie from the previous X-Men franchise.Jake Schreier is directing Marvel Studios’ X-Men.

Marvel fans will recognize Schreier as the director behind Thunderbolts*, giving him another major project within the MCU.

The screenplay is being worked on by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, who previously collaborated with Schreier on Thunderbolts*.

That means Marvel is bringing together several members of a creative team that has already worked within the MCU as it prepares to tackle arguably one of the most important franchises the studio has introduced in years.

Marvel Studios’ new X-Men will arrive in theaters May 5, 2028.That timing is important because this won’t simply be another standalone Marvel reboot.

The X-Men are becoming increasingly important to the larger MCU, with several legacy mutant characters appearing in Avengers: Doomsday before Marvel introduces this new generation.

Marvel has already spent years gradually introducing the idea of mutants throughout its interconnected universe. Now, instead of another cameo or multiverse appearance, we’re finally heading toward a proper Marvel Studios X-Men franchise.

A New Era for Marvel’s Mutants Is Officially Beginning

This is the X-Men movie fans have been waiting years for.

Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox brought the film rights to the X-Men under the same roof as Marvel Studios back in 2019, but Kevin Feige and company have taken their time before completely rebooting the franchise.

We’ve seen legacy mutants return. We’ve heard the word “mutant” enter the MCU. We’ve watched Wolverine team up with Deadpool.

But this is different.

Professor X. Cyclops. Jean Grey. Storm. Rogue. Emma Frost. Mister Sinister.

Marvel’s new generation of X-Men is finally taking shape.

And with Adam Driver stepping into the MCU as Mister Sinister, a completely new cast inheriting some of Marvel’s most iconic characters, and a May 5, 2028 theatrical release now on the calendar, the mutant era of the MCU suddenly feels a whole lot more real.
