Marvel’s next Avengers movie has some enormous shoes to fill — and Robert Downey Jr. knows it.

As anticipation continues to build for Avengers: Doomsday, Robert Downey Jr. is shedding more light on what fans can expect from his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this time, he’s not suiting up as Tony Stark. Instead, the Oscar-winning actor is stepping into the role of one of Marvel’s most iconic villains: Doctor Doom. In a recent interview, Downey discussed the immense responsibility of following one of the MCU’s greatest villains and why getting Doctor Doom right is essential to the film’s success.
During a conversation with Comic Book Resources alongside directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Downey reflected on what made previous Avengers films resonate so strongly with audiences. According to the actor, it all comes down to one thing:
“You’re only as good as your bad guy.”
Downey specifically pointed to Avengers: Infinity War as an example, noting that much of the excitement surrounding that film centered on audiences finally seeing Josh Brolin’s Thanos fully realized on screen. The villain’s emotional depth, motivations, and overwhelming presence helped elevate the film into one of Marvel Studios’ biggest successes.

Now, Downey says Avengers: Doomsday faces a similar challenge.
Rather than simply trying to recreate the success of Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame, the creative team has spent significant time developing a version of Doctor Doom that feels worthy of becoming the MCU’s next defining antagonist. Downey explained that everyone involved understands the expectations surrounding the film and has worked carefully to avoid disappointing longtime Marvel fans.

Joe Russo echoed those thoughts, explaining that the team has approached Avengers: Doomsday with a different mindset than previous Avengers films. According to the director, the story aims to be one of Marvel’s most emotionally layered entries while continuing to push the franchise into new territory.
Downey’s casting as Doctor Doom was one of the biggest surprises in Marvel Studios history. After spending more than a decade portraying Tony Stark, many fans never expected to see him return to the MCU—especially as its newest major villain. The announcement immediately sparked widespread discussion across the Marvel community and raised questions about how this version of Victor Von Doom will differ from the beloved hero audiences knew for years.

While Marvel Studios continues to keep most plot details under wraps, it’s clear that Doctor Doom will play a central role in the next chapter of the Multiverse Saga. The film will unite heroes from across the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Wakanda, and even the X-Men universe as they confront Doom in what is shaping up to be Marvel’s biggest crossover event since Endgame.

With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, expectations couldn’t be higher. If Downey’s comments are any indication, Marvel Studios understands exactly what’s at stake and believes Doctor Doom could become the next unforgettable MCU villain.
