Honestly, a LOT of Disney World fans probably don’t realize just how much history has happened at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

Disney recently shared a brand-new deep dive into the history and evolution of ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World, highlighting how the venue has transformed from a niche sports facility into one of the largest and most versatile sports campuses in the country.
Since opening in March 1997, the complex has hosted:
- Professional athletes
- Major League Baseball
- International tournaments
- NFL training events
- Cheer competitions
- Youth sports championships
- ESPN broadcasts
- Global sporting events
The list of sports moments that have happened here is kind of wild.
The Complex Opened in 1997
The sports campus originally debuted in 1997 as Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex before eventually being rebranded into ESPN Wide World of Sports in 2010 following Disney’s increasing integration with the ESPN brand.

Today, the complex spans more than 220 acres and can host dozens of different sports simultaneously thanks to its baseball stadium, indoor arenas, soccer fields, track and field venues, softball complexes, and multi-purpose athletic facilities.
Disney says the facility was always designed around combining high-level sports competition with the immersive Disney guest experience.
MLB Spring Training Was a HUGE Part of the Complex
One of the biggest chapters in the history of ESPN Wide World of Sports involved Major League Baseball.

The complex served as the longtime spring training home for the Atlanta Braves from 1998 through 2019 before the team eventually relocated to a new facility in North Port, Florida.
Disney also highlighted that the complex later hosted Tampa Bay Rays spring training games, regular-season MLB series, Yankees vs. Rays matchups, and professional player development events.

The Stadium remains one of the centerpiece venues at the complex with 9,500 seats, luxury suites, and professional-level baseball facilities.
MASSIVE Athletes Have Trained Here
Disney’s new history feature also highlighted several famous athletes who have appeared at ESPN Wide World of Sports over the years.
Some of the major names mentioned include Saquon Barkley, Drew Bree, and Dwyane Wade.

The complex has hosted NFL training camps, basketball tournaments, AAU competitions, soccer development programs, cheerleading championships, and international youth sporting events.
Disney specifically highlighted how many athletes competed or trained at the facility before becoming professional stars.
Soccer Has Played a BIG Role Too
Soccer has also become one of the complex’s major focuses over the years.
Disney noted that Orlando City Soccer Club played its 2014 season at ESPN Wide World of Sports before joining Major League Soccer in 2015.

The complex later became internationally known during 2020 when Disney hosted the massive MLS is Back Tournament inside the Walt Disney World “bubble” during the pandemic. Portland Timbers ultimately won the tournament.
Banana Ball Is the Next Big Chapter
One of the biggest reasons Disney shared the history retrospective now is because Banana Ball is officially preparing to arrive at ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Disney says the upcoming games featuring the Party Animals and the Loco Beach Coconuts will bring a completely new entertainment-focused style of baseball to the Disney sports complex.

Banana Ball has exploded in popularity over the last several years thanks to its mix of baseball, comedy, entertainment, fan interaction, and fast-paced gameplay.
Disney Continues Expanding the Complex
Over the years, ESPN Wide World of Sports has continuously evolved with new arenas, broadcast facilities, HD scoreboards, expanded fields, and additional event infrastructure.

The complex now hosts everything from cheerleading championships, runDisney events, soccer tournaments, baseball showcases, Pro Bowl activities, and international competitions.
A Hidden Piece of Disney History
While many Walt Disney World guests focus on the theme parks themselves, ESPN Wide World of Sports has built nearly three decades of history just outside the parks.

From MLB spring training and NFL stars to MLS tournaments and Banana Ball, the complex continues evolving alongside Disney itself.
