If you regularly drive around Walt Disney World property, you may want to prepare for another round of major road construction.

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) is preparing to begin a new roadway improvement project along Western Way beginning in June 2026, bringing additional infrastructure upgrades to one of the busiest traffic corridors near Walt Disney World.
According to project details, the planned work will focus on improving traffic flow and roadway capacity along Western Way, which has become increasingly congested in recent years thanks to continued development around Disney property, Flamingo Crossings, Cast Member housing complexes, and nearby resort expansion.
What the Western Way Project Includes
The upcoming project is expected to include road widening work, utility relocations, drainage improvements, traffic signal modifications, and intersection upgrades along portions of Western Way.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin in June 2026 and will likely continue in phases to minimize traffic disruptions in the area.
Disney World guests who frequently use Western Way to access Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Disney’s Animal Kingdom area resorts, Flamingo Crossings, and western entrance roadways may eventually notice lane shifts, overnight work, and changing traffic patterns as the project ramps up.
Why Western Way Has Become So Important
Western Way has quietly become one of the most important roadways around Walt Disney World over the last several years.
Originally designed as more of a secondary access route, the corridor now handles significantly higher traffic volumes thanks to massive growth at Flamingo Crossings, new apartment and Cast Member housing developments, expanded Disney resort traffic, and increased third-party hotel development west of Disney property.

The roadway has also become a major alternative route for guests trying to avoid Interstate 4 congestion near Disney property.
If you’ve driven Western Way recently during busy travel periods, the need for infrastructure upgrades becomes pretty obvious very quickly.
CFTOD Continues Infrastructure Expansion
The Western Way project is just one of several infrastructure improvements currently underway or planned by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.
Since replacing the former Reedy Creek Improvement District, CFTOD has continued overseeing roadways, utilities, emergency services, and infrastructure projects throughout the Disney district.

As Walt Disney World and surrounding development continue growing, transportation projects like this are expected to become increasingly important for handling future traffic demand across the resort area.
What Guests Should Expect
At this point, officials have not released a full construction timeline or detailed traffic impact schedule, but guests visiting Walt Disney World later this summer should likely expect at least some temporary traffic adjustments once work begins.
And with several major Disney projects, resort expansions, and tourism growth continuing across Central Florida, this probably won’t be the last major roadway project we see around Disney World anytime soon.
We’ll continue watching for more Walt Disney World construction updates, roadway projects, infrastructure changes, transportation news, and Central Florida Tourism Oversight District developments, so be sure to check back soon for more Disney World updates.
