Disney’s next animated movie is getting a little more magical, and the latest behind-the-scenes details include a special surprise for longtime Disney fans!

Walt Disney Animation Studios has shared new information about Hexed, its upcoming animated feature arriving in theaters on November 25, 2026. From the unique rules of witchcraft to a clever Sorcerer Mickey Easter egg, the filmmakers are revealing how they’re bringing this mysterious new world to life.

And it sounds like Disney is having a lot of fun with this one!

Disney Reveals the Three Rules of Magic in Hexed

One of the greatest new details involves how magic actually works in the movie. During an early press presentation, directors Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand explained that witches in the magical realm of Hexe follow a system called the Three I’s:

  • Intention: What the witch wants to accomplish with their magic.
  • Ignition: The personal quality or source that helps activate their magical abilities.
  • Inwitchification: The action a witch takes to bring that magic to life.

The idea is that magic isn’t identical for every character. Instead, spells reflect each witch’s personality, intentions, and individual abilities. That means audiences can expect a wide variety of magical effects throughout the film, rather than everyone using the same glowing spells. And some of those effects are going to be pretty unusual!

Every Witch Has Their Own Magical Style

The filmmakers also revealed that the animation team has developed distinct visual styles for different characters’ magic. For example, Beef Roger Crummchuk, a three-eyed cat voiced by Walton Goggins, uses magic that involves dusty cat hair instead of traditional sparkling pixie dust. His spells also feature unusual sparkles associated with his fizzy drinks.

Meanwhile, the movie’s main character, Billie Doe, has tremendous magical potential but very little experience controlling her abilities. That lack of control is reflected in her spells, which can appear chaotic and unpredictable. The filmmakers wanted the magic to feel physical and tangible, with sparks and effects that seem to interact with the world around the characters.

Interestingly, Disney’s animation team first experimented with these magical effects through traditional hand-drawn animation before translating them into the film’s computer-animated style. It’s another example of how Disney continues incorporating its animation heritage into modern filmmaking.

Sorcerer Mickey Makes a Special Appearance!

Here’s a detail that longtime Disney fans are going to love! The opening Walt Disney Animation Studios logo in Hexed will feature a special Sorcerer Mickey transformation! Rather than using the familiar Steamboat Willie-inspired introduction exactly as audiences have seen it in other Disney Animation films, the filmmakers have added a magical twist. Mickey transforms into his iconic Sorcerer’s Apprentice appearance, complete with the character’s familiar association with Disney’s animated fantasy tradition.

Veerasunthorn explained that the team wanted to acknowledge Disney’s history of magical storytelling, especially the legacy of Sorcerer Mickey. It’s a small detail, but one that feels particularly appropriate for a movie centered on witches and magical powers. The directors also teased that this opening surprise won’t be the only Easter egg waiting for Disney fans throughout the film.

Hexed Will Feature Modern Music, but It’s Not a Musical

Another interesting revelation is that Hexed will feature contemporary songs throughout the movie. However, Disney has confirmed that Hexed is not a traditional animated musical.

Instead of characters regularly breaking into original musical numbers, the filmmakers are incorporating existing songs into the soundtrack. Producer Yvett Merino explained that several songs were initially used as temporary music during the movie’s development. The creative team liked how well they worked with the scenes and decided to incorporate that approach into the finished film. The result should give Hexed a more contemporary feel while helping establish the personalities of its characters and the atmosphere of its magical world.

What Is Disney’s Hexed About?

Hexed follows Billie Doe, a 16-year-old girl who discovers that her magical abilities have been suppressed since childhood. After her powers unexpectedly emerge, Billie finds herself transported from her ordinary suburban life into Hexe, a mysterious world inhabited by witches.

Alongside her cautious mother, Alice, Billie must navigate unfamiliar magic, uncover family secrets, and learn what makes her abilities so unusual. The movie features an impressive voice cast, including:

  • Hailee Steinfeld as Billie Doe
  • Rashida Jones as Alice Doe
  • Walton Goggins as Beef Roger Crummchuk
  • Jodie Foster as Queen Celeste
  • Stephen Fry as Elias Quire
  • Tracey Ullman as Ms. Quill

The film is directed by Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand, co-directed by Josie Trinidad, and produced by Roy Conli and Yvett Merino. Hexed is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 65th animated feature and is scheduled to arrive exclusively in theaters on November 25, 2026.

My Take

love that Disney is giving Hexed its own rules for magic rather than simply relying on the familiar spells and wands we’ve seen in so many fantasy movies. The idea that every witch’s magic reflects their personality opens the door for some really creative animation, and I especially appreciate that the team started experimenting with hand-drawn effects before bringing them into the computer-animated world. Those little artistic decisions are part of what makes Disney Animation so special to me.

And can we talk about Sorcerer Mickey appearing in the opening logo?! I absolutely love those kinds of Disney Easter eggs, especially when they connect a new movie to the studio’s history. Between that nostalgic touch, the unusual characters, and the mysterious world of Hexe, I’m really curious to see how this movie comes together. I’m also interested in the decision to use contemporary music instead of making it a traditional Disney musical. It feels like Hexed is aiming for a different kind of Disney animated adventure, and I’m excited to see it!
