A fireworks launch site that’s sat quiet for six years just woke back up overnight, and nobody’s entirely sure why.
Which, honestly, is my favorite kind of Disney mystery.
Late Tuesday night, guests around Disney’s Hollywood Studios started reporting large fireworks shells launching every few minutes from somewhere inside the park. Attractions 360° on X captured video of it from outside the property, and the pattern was pretty distinct: individual shells firing repeatedly with long gaps in between, rather than anything resembling a complete, choreographed show. This was clearly a test, not a performance.
The launches appear to be coming from the fireworks site across World Drive…a purpose-built location Disney constructed about a decade ago specifically for Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular. That show ended its run back in March 2020, and the World Drive launch site has sat almost entirely dormant ever since. The only real pyro Hollywood Studios has used in the years since has come from smaller rooftop launch points around the park, which look fine but don’t carry the same scale or drama as a full launch from the dedicated site.
So why test it now? Nobody knows for certain, but there are a few reasonable theories floating around. Hollywood Studios has a private Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo event scheduled for October 20th, and Disney has used fireworks for private functions before, so testing infrastructure ahead of that closure is one straightforward explanation. The upcoming holiday season is another strong possibility — Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! returns as part of Disney Jollywood Nights this year, and while recent versions of that show have leaned on smaller-scale pyrotechnics, this test could hint at Disney scaling the effects back up for 2026. New Year’s Eve is a third option, since Hollywood Studios has run countdown fireworks shows the past two years running, though those also relied mostly on rooftop launches rather than the World Drive site specifically.
And then there’s the more exciting, far less certain possibility: that Hollywood Studios could be quietly gearing up for an actual return of a full nighttime spectacular. The park has a real history here, Symphony in the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular became a nightly show back in late 2015 before being replaced by Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular in mid-2016, which combined large-scale fireworks with projections, lasers, and fire effects around the Chinese Theatre. Disney hasn’t announced anything close to a new nighttime show, though, so this remains speculation rather than anything close to confirmed.
For now, all we really know is that a launch site that’s been sitting untouched for six years suddenly has shells going up out of it again, and there’s no shortage of guesses about what that means. We’ll be watching closely for any official word.
