Shanghai Disney Resort’s first-ever Marvel-themed land continued making headlines this week, with Disney sharing new looks at the high-speed Spider-Man roller coaster that will anchor the entire experience. And considering how fast this project has moved since it was first announced, this update feels like a genuine “we’re almost there!” moment for Marvel fans.
A Quick Refresher: How We Got Here
If you haven’t been following along, here’s the timeline. The Spider-Man-themed land was first announced at D23 back in August 2024, when Josh D’Amaro (then chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, now Disney’s CEO) revealed plans for what would become Shanghai Disneyland’s first major Super Hero-themed attraction. Imagineers broke ground on the land in May 2025, and things have moved at an impressively fast clip ever since. The coaster went vertical by September 2025, and track installation was fully complete by mid-2026. For a major coaster project, that’s a seriously quick build!
What Makes This Land So Special
Once complete, this will be Shanghai Disneyland’s ninth themed land, and it’s set to be one of the park’s three major expansions. Located right next to the park’s Zootopia area, the land will center around a high-energy thrill coaster starring Spider-Man himself…the park’s first-ever Marvel attraction, and honestly, a genuinely big deal for a park that’s been steadily building out its lineup of only-in-Shanghai experiences.
Beyond the coaster, the land is set to include Spider-Man and friends-themed shopping, dining, and entertainment, giving guests a reason to stick around even after they’ve ridden the coaster itself.
So What’s the Ride Actually About?
According to Disney’s own description, the story goes like this: “Peter Parker has gotten himself…and us…in a bit of a tight spot. We’re going to follow HIM (at very high speeds) to get us out of trouble.” In other words, don’t expect a slow, scenic tour. This is a high-speed chase alongside Spider-Man himself, and concept art released after the initial announcement backs that up, showing Spider-Man tangled up in a high-stakes situation involving Spider-Bots and falling shipping crates, with guests along for every twist and turn.
And speaking of Spider-Bots — construction updates earlier this year revealed a genuinely giant Spider-Bot prop has already arrived on-site at the land, which is exactly the kind of detail that gets Marvel fans buzzing about how immersive this experience is shaping up to be.
What About the Coaster’s Look?
From the construction photos shared so far, the track is unmistakably Spider-Man themed — a bold red color scheme that matches the hero’s suit, weaving through twists and turns across the skyline of the new land. Disney hasn’t officially confirmed a name for the attraction yet, but eagle-eyed fans have spotted a “Web Launcher” graphic on one of the ride’s support beams, which more than a few people are betting will end up being the official name once Disney makes it official.
When Can You Ride It?
Disney hasn’t locked in an opening date just yet, but between the coaster going vertical last September and track installation wrapping up this summer, this project is clearly in its final stretch. If the pace of construction so far is any indication, Marvel fans shouldn’t have to wait too much longer for an official opening window.
