Kingdom Hearts fans, breathe — because it’s officially happening. Disney just announced Kingdom Hearts: The Series, and it’s headed to Disney Channel and Disney+.
The news dropped during D23’s Disney Entertainment Showcase, and the teaser poster alone is enough to get people talking.
Disney teased a moody, anime-inspired shot of a character wielding what is unmistakably a Keyblade, with a “Coming Soon” tag under both the Disney Channel and Disney+ logos. No title character reveal, no Sora confirmation, just vibes — extremely good, extremely mysterious vibes.
Here’s what we actually know so far. The series is being developed in partnership with Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix, which is honestly the most reassuring detail in this whole announcement — this isn’t Disney handing the IP off to a random studio, it’s the actual mind behind the games staying involved. Disney says the show will reimagine the franchise with a brand-new story, one that expands the Kingdom Hearts universe while still honoring the characters fans have loved for years.
Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family, spoke about the announcement, saying Kingdom Hearts has captivated players for years with its “unique blend of adventure and imagination,” and that turning it into a series felt like an exciting way to bring that world to life in a new format while still keeping it authentically Kingdom Hearts.
What we don’t know yet: no release date, no voice cast, no episode count, no confirmation on whether Sora, Riku, and Kairi are involved, and no word on how it connects (if at all) to the games’ ongoing story, including the freshly announced Coco world heading to Kingdom Hearts IV. Some early coverage from the showcase floor even referred to this as a “Kingdom Hearts anime,” though Disney’s own materials are sticking with the simpler “Kingdom Hearts: The Series” title for now, so take that label with a grain of salt until it’s confirmed.
For a franchise fans have wanted adapted outside of games for years, this is a big one. We’ll be watching closely for more details as they come. What are you hoping to see from Kingdom Hearts: The Series? Let me know your dream cast and storyline!
