We’ve got our first real look at the reimagined Carousel of Progress, and John’s dog Rover made the cut, so honestly, whatever else changes, I’m calling this a win already!
Disney unveiled new costumes for the attraction’s overhaul at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and it’s the clearest glimpse yet of where this classic is headed.
Quick refresher: Carousel of Progress has been closed for a major reimagining, and the new version is shifting its timeline — moving through the latter half of the 20th century and into the early 21st, before landing on an all-new “possible future” finale.
As for what was actually shown, John is decked out in a yellow sweater and khaki pants, standing alongside Rover (yes, the dog is confirmed), while Sarah wears a sleek, futuristic yellow dress-and-pants combo pulled straight from concept art we’d seen before. There’s also a model showing off Act 4’s new take on the future — Sarah’s seen sitting in front of a fireplace and conversation pit, which is giving very “1970s sci-fi magazine cover,” in the best way.
Another model shows John and Rover in a kitchen, and concept art displayed around the booth gave us a side-by-side of the new show scenes next to a photo of the original “possible future” scene, and it’s clear Disney’s aiming to honor the original while still pushing it somewhere new.
Is it a totally different show, or a love letter to the original with fresh paint? Based on what’s on display so far, it looks like Disney’s threading that needle carefully — new setting, new costumes, but Rover’s still along for the ride. Some things you just don’t touch.
