One of Disney World’s most beloved classic attractions is officially getting a major refresh, and longtime Disney fans are VERY emotional about it!

Disney

Disney has confirmed that Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom will soon receive significant new updates, including entirely new scenes and the addition of a brand-new Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics figure. The announcement was originally revealed during Destination D23 2025 as part of Disney’s ongoing investment in Tomorrowland.

The biggest addition coming to Carousel of Progress is an entirely new introductory act starring Walt Disney himself through the use of Audio-Animatronics technology. Disney says guests will soon be able to hear directly from Walt before the attraction begins its journey through generations of technological progress.

According to Walt Disney Imagineer Chris Beatty, the new scene is designed to celebrate Walt’s original vision for the attraction while introducing the show to an entirely new generation of Disney fans.

Adding Walt Disney to one of the last attractions he personally helped create feels weirdly perfect.

Disney Says the “Heart” of the Attraction Will Stay the Same

Even with the new scenes and updates, Disney has repeatedly emphasized that the core identity of Carousel of Progress is NOT going away. Disney Imagineering specifically stated that: “The heart of it will stay the same.”

Disney

Disney also teased that updates are coming for John, Sarah, and the rest of the famous Carousel family, although the company has not yet revealed exactly how the existing acts themselves may evolve.

That wording has already sparked plenty of speculation among Disney fans online about possible dialogue changes, refreshed technology references, updated costumes, or even entirely refreshed final scenes.

This Will Be the First Major Refresh in Over 30 Years

Carousel of Progress has remained largely unchanged since its last major update in the 1990s, making this one of the attraction’s most significant refurbishments in decades.

Disney

The attraction originally debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair before moving to Disneyland and eventually relocating to Magic Kingdom in 1975, where it still operates today in Tomorrowland.

Disney also highlighted that Carousel of Progress remains the longest-running stage show in American theater history.

Honestly, that’s kind of an incredible legacy for a theme park attraction.

Work Already Appears To Be Underway

Earlier this year, Walt Disney Imagineering filed permits connected to Carousel of Progress, strongly suggesting behind-the-scenes work has already started on the upcoming changes.

Disney

Disney still has not announced an official debut timeline for the new acts, but construction permits and Imagineering activity suggest the project is actively moving forward.

And based on Disney’s comments so far, this doesn’t sound like a small refurbishment.

Fans Are VERY Emotional About These Changes

Carousel of Progress has become one of the most nostalgic attractions at Walt Disney World for longtime Disney fans. Between the Sherman Brothers song, Walt Disney’s legacy, and the attraction’s optimism about the future, many guests consider it one of the emotional “heart” attractions of Magic Kingdom.

Disney

That’s why Disney fans have reacted so strongly to the announcement — both excited and nervous at the same time. Updating Carousel of Progress is the kind of thing Disney fans take VERY seriously.

Tomorrowland Is Quietly Changing Again

The upcoming Carousel of Progress refresh joins several other major Tomorrowland updates happening around Magic Kingdom, including Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin updates, new entertainment investments, ongoing Tomorrowland infrastructure work, and Disney’s growing focus on classic attraction preservation.

And while Disney hasn’t revealed every detail yet, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Tomorrowland may be entering another major evolution phase.
