There are Disney attractions…and then there’s Carousel of Progress.

Disney

Disney recently shared a new look back at the history and legacy of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, one of the most historically significant attractions in all of Disney Parks history. The beloved Tomorrowland attraction at Magic Kingdom has become far more than just a classic ride — it’s now one of the last remaining attractions personally developed by Walt Disney himself.

Walt Disney originally conceived the attraction as part of a proposed expansion area at Disneyland known as Edison Square. When those plans were ultimately abandoned, Disney and WED Enterprises reimagined the concept for the 1964 New York World’s Fair instead.

Disney

The attraction debuted as part of the General Electric pavilion under the name Progressland, where guests experienced a rotating theater show following an American family through different decades of technological advancement powered by electricity.

Disney

Disney described the attraction as Walt’s idea “from beginning to end,” and it quickly became one of the biggest hits of the World’s Fair. Millions of guests experienced the show during its run in New York.

The Attraction Eventually Moved to Disneyland — Then Disney World

After the World’s Fair ended, Carousel of Progress was relocated to Disneyland in 1967 as part of Tomorrowland’s major overhaul.

Disney

However, because Disneyland relied heavily on repeat local visitors, attendance for the attraction eventually declined over time. General Electric later requested the attraction be moved again — this time to Walt Disney World, where a larger percentage of guests were tourists visiting for the first time.

Carousel of Progress officially reopened at Magic Kingdom in 1975, where it still operates today in Tomorrowland.

It’s Officially a Disney Legend

One of the biggest facts Disney highlighted is that Carousel of Progress now holds the distinction of being the longest-running stage show in American theater history.

Disney

The attraction still follows the same core premise created by Walt Disney more than 60 years ago, with guests rotating through scenes showing how technological innovation transformed everyday life throughout the 20th century.

And yes — generations of Disney fans still leave singing: “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow…”

Honestly, few Disney attractions have that kind of emotional connection across multiple generations of guests.

Disney Is Preparing NEW Updates for the Attraction

Disney’s history feature also arrives as the company prepares new updates for Carousel of Progress in the coming years.

At Destination D23 in 2025, Disney officially announced plans to add a brand-new introductory scene featuring an Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney himself before the attraction begins.

Disney

Disney said guests will soon be able to hear directly from Walt before following the famous Carousel family through four generations of progress.

The upcoming Walt Disney figure will build on the same Audio-Animatronics technology legacy Walt helped pioneer himself during the 1964 World’s Fair with attractions like Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.

Adding Walt Disney himself to Carousel of Progress feels weirdly perfect.

Tomorrowland Keeps Changing — But Carousel of Progress Remains

Over the decades, Tomorrowland has constantly evolved around Carousel of Progress. Attractions have come and gone, entire sections have been rebuilt, and futuristic visions have shifted repeatedly as real-world technology advanced faster than Disney could predict.

But through all of it, Carousel of Progress has survived.

Disney

For many Disney fans, the attraction has become less about predicting the future and more about preserving Walt Disney’s original optimism about innovation, family, and progress itself.

We’ll continue following all the latest Magic Kingdom updates, Tomorrowland changes, Carousel of Progress news, Disney attraction history, and Walt Disney World developments, so be sure to check back soon for more Disney Parks coverage.
