After months hidden behind scaffolding and scrims, one of Magic Kingdom’s most beloved landmarks is finally back — and it’s looking better than ever.
The exterior refurbishment of The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom has reached a major milestone, with Disney removing the remaining scrims from the attraction’s iconic façade. Guests can once again enjoy an unobstructed view of the stately Hudson River Valley manor, which has undergone a careful exterior refresh while remaining open to riders throughout the project.
The biggest change is simply being able to see the attraction again.
For the past several months, much of the Haunted Mansion’s exterior was hidden behind scaffolding, black scrims, and printed construction walls as crews worked to restore and repaint the aging façade. Now, the mansion’s weathered elegance has returned to full view, once again serving as the dramatic centerpiece at the end of Liberty Square.
While the façade itself appears complete, construction fencing remains at ground level in portions of the area, indicating that some surrounding work is still wrapping up.
Don’t expect a dramatically different Haunted Mansion.
Disney’s goal was restoration rather than reimagining, and the finished product stays true to the attraction’s classic appearance. Fresh paint, restored architectural details, and renewed finishes help the mansion look much closer to how guests remember it while preserving its intentionally aged, haunted character.
One of the most noticeable improvements is the mansion’s refreshed color palette. The exterior appears richer and more vibrant, while still maintaining the eerie, timeworn atmosphere that has defined the attraction since Magic Kingdom opened in 1971.
Earlier Work Included the Mansion’s Roof
Although the façade is now complete, guests may remember earlier stages of the refurbishment that focused on the mansion’s distinctive roofline.
During construction, Disney refreshed the attraction’s iconic cupola, replacing its faded appearance with a much deeper bronze finish. The bat-shaped weathervane was also restored, giving one of the mansion’s most recognizable architectural features a renewed look.
Those roof improvements now blend seamlessly with the freshly restored exterior below.
The Attraction Never Closed
One of the most impressive parts of the project is that The Haunted Mansion remained open throughout the entire exterior refurbishment.
While guests entered through temporary pathways surrounded by construction walls and scrims, Disney was able to complete extensive exterior work without taking one of Magic Kingdom’s most popular attractions offline.
That meant guests could continue experiencing the Ghost Host, Madame Leota, the Haunted Ballroom, and the Hitchhiking Ghosts even while crews worked just outside.
More Changes Are Coming to the Area
Although the mansion itself has returned to the spotlight, the surrounding area will continue evolving over the next several years.
Disney is preparing for the future Piston Peak National Park expansion beyond Frontierland, while work also continues behind the scenes for the future Villains Land expansion. Previous permits have also pointed to additional infrastructure work near the Haunted Mansion queue as Disney prepares this corner of Magic Kingdom for significant growth.
For now, however, the Haunted Mansion once again stands proudly over Liberty Square without a curtain of scaffolding obscuring its famous silhouette.
For many Disney fans, that’s a welcome sight — and just in time for the start of the Halloween season.
