Universal may have just quietly built one of the smartest family theme park concepts we’ve seen in YEARS!
Universal Destinations & Experiences has officially shared a closer look at everything families can expect at the upcoming Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, and this place looks WAY more ambitious than many fans originally expected. The brand-new resort is specifically designed for families with younger children and will officially open in 2026.
The Entire Park Is Built Specifically for Younger Kids
Unlike Universal Orlando or Universal Hollywood, Universal Kids Resort is being designed almost entirely around families with smaller children. Universal says the park will focus heavily on interactive play, family-friendly rides, character encounters, sensory-friendly spaces, immersive themed environments, and smaller-scale attractions designed for younger guests.
The resort will feature seven themed lands inspired by Shrek, Puss in Boots, Trolls, Jurassic World, SpongeBob SquarePants, Minions, and Gabby’s Dollhouse
Which is a hard shift from the “bigger thrills first” approach Universal is typically known for.
Shrek’s Swamp Looks Completely Chaotic
One of the biggest lands coming to the park is Shrek’s Swamp, which Universal describes as a giant interactive play environment inspired by Shrek’s iconic home.
The area will include Shrek’s Swamp Splash & Smash water play zone, swamp-themed playgrounds, interactive activities, and a family ride called Shrek & Fiona’s Happily Ogre After.
Jurassic World Adventure Camp Has Actual Coasters
Universal also confirmed that Jurassic World Adventure Camp may actually contain some of the park’s most ambitious attractions.
The land will feature Jurassic World: Cretaceous Coaster, Mr. DNA’s Double Helix Spin, Pteranodrop, dinosaur paddock play areas, lookout towers, baby dinosaur encounters, and sensory gardens.
Universal says guests will search for Baby Bumpy aboard the family coaster while exploring the dinosaur-filled camp environment.
SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom Is FULLY Coming to Life
Universal also revealed that Bikini Bottom will become a fully themed land inside the park inspired by Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants.
The area will include Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, jellyfish-themed attractions, Bikini Bottom recreation areas, and interactive undersea environments
Minions, Trolls, and Puss in Boots Are Getting Entire Lands Too
Universal also confirmed several additional fully themed environments, including Minions vs. Minions: Bello Bay Club.
This land will feature water-based attractions, interactive Minion chaos, purple Minion vs. yellow Minion competitions, and family splash areas.
TrollsFest
The Trolls-themed area will include…
…Rhonda’s TrollsFest Express coaster, Hair in the Clouds aerial ride, dance parties, and music-focused interactive experiences.
Puss in Boots Del Mar
This land will feature the Swings Over Del Mar ride, carnival-style games, kitty adoption experiences, and sensory-friendly spaces.
And Universal seems extremely focused on making this park feel active and interactive instead of just ride-focused.
Gabby’s Dollhouse Is the Center of the Entire Resort
At the center of Universal Kids Resort will be the Isle of Curiosity, inspired by Gabby’s Dollhouse. Universal says this area acts as the main hub of the park with play lawns, character encounters, dance parties, interactive discovery zones, retail experiences, and dining locations.
Gabby herself will host a “Cat-Tastic Dance Party” experience for families visiting the resort.
There’s ALSO a Fully Themed Hotel
Universal also confirmed that the resort will include a colorful 300-room on-site hotel designed specifically for families with younger children.
The hotel will sit directly at the entrance of the park and include family-focused room layouts, bright themed environments, character-inspired decor, and easy park access.
Construction photos already show the massive, colorful hotel structure rising near the front of the property.
Universal Is Clearly Targeting a DIFFERENT Audience Here
Honestly, what makes Universal Kids Resort feel so interesting is that Universal doesn’t seem to be trying to directly compete with Universal Orlando or Disney’s larger parks here.
Instead, this feels designed specifically for preschoolers, early elementary-age kids, shorter family vacations, regional visitors, and even families not ready for larger destination theme park trips.
Universal executives have repeatedly described the project as a completely new type of theme park experience for the company.
Universal Kids Resort Opens in 2026
Universal Kids Resort is currently scheduled to open in Frisco, Texas, in 2026 as Universal continues rapidly expanding beyond its traditional Orlando and Hollywood markets.
The project follows the opening of Epic Universe in Orlando and joins several other major expansion projects currently underway for Universal Destinations & Experiences worldwide.
And based on everything Universal has revealed so far? This little park may end up being MUCH bigger than anyone expected!
