A Disney program that has quietly helped thousands of Central Florida students discover confidence, creativity, and a love for performing arts is celebrating a major milestone this year.
Disney Musicals in Schools has officially reached its 10-year anniversary in Central Florida, marking a decade of collaboration between Walt Disney World, Disney Theatrical Group, and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
Over the past ten years, this program has helped elementary school students throughout the region gain access to theater education opportunities that many schools otherwise may not have been able to offer.
What Is Disney Musicals in Schools?
Disney Musicals in Schools is a program created by Disney Theatrical Group that helps elementary schools establish sustainable musical theater programs. The initiative launched nationally in 2009 and later expanded into Central Florida through a partnership with the Dr. Phillips Center and Walt Disney World.
Participating schools receive free Disney musical scripts, performance rights, show materials, teacher training, and professional coaching from theater teaching artists.
The goal is not simply to produce one school musical, but to help schools build long-term performing arts programs that continue for years after the initial partnership ends.
The program has now impacted approximately 6,000 students across 36 schools throughout Central Florida over the past decade.
Schools from Orange and Osceola counties have participated in the initiative, with students learning skills connected to performance, teamwork, creativity, communication, problem-solving, and self-confidence.
The program is specifically designed to use musical theater as a way to strengthen relationships between students, teachers, families, and local communities.
Students Recently Performed on the Walt Disney Theater Stage
As part of the 10-year celebration, students from participating schools recently took part in the annual Student Share event at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando.
During the showcase, students performed Disney musical numbers they had spent months rehearsing.
The performances took place on the Walt Disney Theater stage in front of family members, friends, educators, and more than 200 Disney VoluntEARS who attended to support the students.
For many students, it marked the opportunity to perform in a professional theater environment for the very first time.
Ryan Simpson, education director at Dr. Phillips Center, said the partnership has helped schools across Central Florida create theater programs that go far beyond teaching students how to perform on stage.
Disney representatives also emphasized how the program has helped students discover confidence and creativity through live theater experiences.
According to Disney and Dr. Phillips Center, the initiative continues helping schools establish arts programs that remain sustainable long after the first year of participation ends.
Schools selected for Disney Musicals in Schools participate in a multi-week residency program led by trained teaching artists from Dr. Phillips Center and Disney Theatrical Group.
Teachers work alongside theater professionals to learn how to direct productions, teach choreography, organize rehearsals, and lead musical performances.
Each school ultimately stages its own Disney KIDS musical production before participating in the Student Share celebration.
The program also includes continued support in future years as schools become more independent in running their theater programs.
While Walt Disney World is often associated with attractions and vacations, programs like Disney Musicals in Schools highlight another side of Disney’s presence in Central Florida.
Arts education programs are often among the first opportunities cut in underfunded schools, and initiatives like this help provide students with access to creative experiences they may not otherwise receive.
