Pixar didn’t just cast Conan O’Brien in Toy Story 5 — they roasted him into saying yes.
Casting stories in Hollywood are usually pretty straightforward…but this one? Not even close. Pixar had a very specific actor in mind for a brand-new character, and their approach to locking him in was anything but typical.
When it came to casting the new character Smarty Pants in Toy Story 5, director Andrew Stanton didn’t just want any voice; he had one person in mind from the start: Conan O’Brien.
After being introduced to O’Brien’s podcast by his wife, Stanton became convinced the comedian was perfect for the role. And instead of a traditional pitch, he sent a short, unforgettable offer letter that leaned into humor and a little bit of an insult.
The character Conan was being asked to voice? Not exactly your typical Pixar hero.
Smarty Pants is described as a potty-training device for toddlers — a toy with just two buttons (“No. 1” and “No. 2”) that has long since been abandoned and left in a playhouse. Over time, he’s developed a personality that’s sarcastic, brash, and a little embarrassing to be around…but still has a good heart underneath it all.
In the film, he’s essentially a forgotten toy (likened to a “town drunk” figure), adding a comedic, slightly chaotic energy to the story.
The now-infamous offer letter ended with a punchline that made the casting decision unforgettable: “You will not have to act for this roll.”
Yes — roll, not role. And no, it wasn’t a typo.
That one line, equal parts joke and jab, was apparently all it took. Conan O’Brien said yes immediately.
O’Brien is known for his self-deprecating humor, and the character of Smarty Pants seems almost tailor-made to match that energy. According to Stanton, the goal wasn’t to have Conan transform into the character, but simply to be himself.
And clearly, that approach worked.
Toy Story 5 is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026, bringing back familiar favorites alongside new characters like Smarty Pants.
The film is expected to explore how traditional toys compete with modern technology for kids’ attention — introducing a fresh dynamic into the beloved franchise.
