If you thought Toy Story 4 was emotional…you might want to prepare yourself.

Because new comments from Pixar suggest the next chapter in this iconic series could take things in a very different (and much heavier) direction.

Director Andrew Stanton is teasing that Toy Story 5 may not follow the traditional happy ending fans have come to expect.

In recent comments, Stanton pointed to a central theme of the film: the growing dominance of technology in children’s lives — and what that means for toys like Woody and Buzz.

“When tech comes in, it wins,” Stanton explained, emphasizing that the story leans into the reality that screens often replace traditional playtime.

A Very Different Kind of “Villain”

Instead of a typical antagonist, Toy Story 5 introduces a more modern challenge.

The film will feature a tablet-like device named Lilypad, representing the increasing role of technology in how kids play.

That shift sets up a story where the toys aren’t just competing with another character — they’re facing something much harder to overcome. And according to Stanton, that’s intentional.

Rather than positioning the toys to “win” in the traditional sense, the film explores a reality where technology may simply take over — a concept that could lead to a more bittersweet or even bleak conclusion.

What This Could Mean For Buzz, Woody, and the Gang

The Toy Story franchise has always tackled big themes like growing up, change, and letting go.

This time, the stakes feel even more final.

Early hints suggest the film could serve as a definitive ending for the characters, building on where Toy Story 4 left off — with Woody forging his own path and the rest of the toys adjusting to life with Bonnie.

If the story follows through on its central theme, it could mean:
