Big Thunder Mountain Railroad just revealed its first visible update, and it’s giving us a real glimpse at what’s coming next!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

With construction walls still up and the ride closed for refurbishment, Disney has quietly installed a brand-new entrance sign—and it’s the first real sign (literally) that things are starting to come back together.

The updated Big Thunder Mountain Railroad sign is now in place above the attraction’s entrance, and while it stays true to the original design, everything about it feels sharper and more intentional.

In closer

The wood-style backing is still there, keeping that rugged, Old West mining town aesthetic fully intact. But the lettering? Brighter. Cleaner. More defined. It pops in a way that makes it feel freshly painted without losing that weathered Frontierland charm.

It’s not a redesign—it’s a glow-up.

Above the sign, the classic “BTMRR” emblem remains, framed by the familiar wooden beams and hanging lanterns. But even here, things feel subtly upgraded. The structure looks more refined, the details more crisp, and the entire entrance reads as one cohesive, refreshed moment instead of a collection of aging elements.

And that’s where this update really stands out. While this might seem like a small change, it’s actually doing a lot of heavy lifting!

The new sign

This is the first guest-facing piece of the refurbishment that we can clearly see—and it sets the tone for everything else happening behind those walls. Construction barriers are still up, and posted notices confirm the ride remains closed, but this update signals that Disney is moving out of demolition mode and into rebuild mode.

And that’s when things start to get exciting.

We already know this refurbishment includes major track work and updated show elements, but this new signage hints at something more subtle: a focus on overall presentation. Not changing what Big Thunder is—but elevating how it feels from the moment you walk up.

Right now, you can only catch glimpses of what’s happening from the outside—but this sign is the first real piece of the finished product we’ve seen.

And if this is the standard Disney is setting for the rest of the ride? Big Thunder might come back looking better than ever!
