The Walt Disney World Railroad officially closed for refurbishment at Magic Kingdom today, September 28…

…and Disney’s calendar shows it staying down through October 29.

If your October trip had a relaxing train ride penciled in, it’s time to adjust the plan. (Guilty as charged, I’ve absolutely used the train as a “sit down and pretend I’m not tired” break.)

Disney’s calendar lists the closure from September 28 through October 29, with the trains scheduled to return on October 30, when they’re listed with their usual 9 AM to 8:30 PM hours. Disney has described the project as a routine refurbishment and hasn’t said what work is involved. One wrinkle worth knowing: Disney’s refurbishment schedule has also described the railroad’s return as expected in November, so October 30 may be a target rather than a guarantee. If you’re planning around it, it’s smart to double-check the date closer to your visit.

This closure also lands on a railroad that’s already been running differently. Frontierland Station has been closed since July 2025 while construction moves ahead on Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park, so the trains have been operating as a shuttle between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland instead of making the full trip around the park. With Main Street Station and Fantasyland Station now closing too, there’s no train service at all until the trains return.

The timing is a little unlucky for guests. It falls across some of the busiest fall break weeks in early October, when a lot of families are counting on the railroad as a shortcut between the front and back of the park, or just as a chance to sit down and rest. If you’re visiting during the closure, plan a little extra walking time between Main Street and Fantasyland and build in a bench break or two.

It’s easy to forget how special this attraction is. The Walt Disney World Railroad is an opening-day attraction at Magic Kingdom that runs on historic steam locomotives, with four locomotives, five passenger cars each, and room for about 365 people on each train. It’s closing just days before Walt Disney World marks its 55th anniversary on October 1, and a routine refurbishment is exactly how an attraction that old keeps running for the next generation of riders.

There’s one more date to keep in mind. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure begins its own routine refurbishment on November 2, and Disney expects it to reopen in December. If the railroad’s return does slip into November, there could be a short window when both attractions are down at the same time. There’s no reason to believe the two projects are connected, but it’s a good reason to check the My Disney Experience app before a November visit.
