Stranger Things: Return to Hawkins is the second and final live show confirmed for Halloween Horror Nights 35, and it’s giving Netflix’s mega-hit series its biggest HHN spotlight yet. Here’s everything we know about the show, its concept, and how it ties into this year’s Stranger Things haunted house.
Stranger Things: Return to Hawkins takes place at the Studio Lagoon, utilizing the waterfront near the New York area of Universal Studios Florida for water features, projections, and lighting. Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs select nights from August 28 through November 1, 2026.
This show was announced on July 15, 2026, making it the second and final piece of live entertainment confirmed for HHN 35, joining the previously announced Nightmare Fuel: Blood Noir. It also replaces last year’s lagoon show, Haunt-O-Phonic: A Ghoulish Journey.

According to Jason Horne, assistant director of entertainment creative development at Universal Orlando, the appeal of the lagoon setting is its ability to bring stories to life on an epic scale. The show features towering water screens, dynamic lighting effects, and immersive audio, including fan-favorite music pulled from the series, all used to project unforgettable Stranger Things scenes across the water in a way that hasn’t been done at HHN before.
Rather than focusing on just one season, Return to Hawkins pulls moments from all five seasons of the show, offering longtime fans a full nostalgic trip through the story’s biggest characters, adventures, and scenes since it first premiered.
How It’s Different From the Stranger Things Haunted House
It’s worth clearing up some confusion here, because HHN 35 actually has two separate Stranger Things experiences this year. The haunted house (based on the show’s fifth and final season) takes guests through locations like the Wheeler house, Hawkins National Laboratory, the MAC-Z military base, the Upside Down, and the Abyss, with encounters against Demogorgons and Vecna along the way.
Return to Hawkins, on the other hand, is a standalone lagoon show, not a walkthrough haunted house. Where the house is a tense, scare-driven experience centered on the final season alone, the lagoon show is designed as a broader, more celebratory retrospective spanning the show’s entire five-season run.
What Fans Are Buzzing About
One detail longtime Stranger Things fans are especially curious about: music rights. When the Stranger Things haunted house debuted in past years, Universal reportedly wasn’t able to secure the rights to some of the show’s most iconic licensed needle-drops, like “Master of Puppets” or “Running Up That Hill.” Since Return to Hawkins is built specifically around music from the series, fans are watching closely to see whether Universal was able to license those signature songs this time around, or whether the show will lean more on the series’ original score instead.
There’s also a bit of a mixed reaction to the format itself — some fans are excited that this could be one of the biggest, most bombastic lagoon shows HHN has produced, thanks to how much iconic music and imagery Stranger Things has to draw from. Others have noted it feels like a lower-key choice for a milestone 35th anniversary year, since it’s based on a licensed Netflix property rather than tying directly into HHN’s own original Icons and mythology.
