Talk about a serious Jungle Cruise promotion! Walt Disney World’s newest president started his Disney career behind the wheel of one of those pun-filled boats.
Walt Disney World is officially entering a major new era, and the person now leading the resort has a history with the Most Magical Place on Earth that stretches back nearly 45 years. Joe Schott has returned to Walt Disney World as its new president, completing a full-circle journey that began with a part-time role at one of Magic Kingdom’s most iconic attractions.
And while his new title is a pretty big change from Jungle Cruise skipper, Schott is stepping into the position at an even bigger moment for Walt Disney World. Multiple new lands, attractions, resort investments, and construction projects are currently underway or in development across the Florida property.
Joe Schott officially began his tenure as President of Walt Disney World Resort on August 3, 2026, succeeding Jeff Vahle, who retired after a 36-year career with The Walt Disney Company. Disney initially announced Schott’s appointment on May 18 as part of a larger series of Disney Experiences leadership changes.
In a message shared as he assumed the position, Schott reflected on the unlikely journey that brought him back to the place where his Disney career first began.
Nearly 45 years ago, Schott accepted a part-time job as a Jungle Cruise skipper at Walt Disney World. At the time, he said he never could have imagined where that opportunity would eventually take him.
After holding leadership positions at Disney destinations in Florida, Europe, Japan, China, and other parts of the world, Schott said returning to Walt Disney World “feels a lot like coming home.”
Honestly, going from delivering Jungle Cruise dad jokes to overseeing the entirety of Walt Disney World may be one of the most impressive Disney career glow-ups we have ever seen.
Schott said he is honored to lead Walt Disney World during what he described as an especially exciting period for the resort.
With major investments and growth underway throughout the Walt Disney World property, Schott said the company has “tremendous opportunities” ahead. He also outlined three primary areas of focus as he begins his new role:
- Supporting Walt Disney World Cast Members
- Delivering exceptional experiences for guests
- Building upon the resort’s existing foundation
Schott’s official Disney Experiences biography similarly states that he will focus on supporting Cast Members, improving guest experiences, and building upon the investments shaping Walt Disney World’s future.
Those priorities are especially notable because of the sheer size of the operation he is now responsible for leading.
Walt Disney World employs approximately 80,000 Cast Members and includes four theme parks, two water parks, more than 25 resort hotels, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, and the Disney Springs shopping, dining, and entertainment district. It is also described by Disney as the largest single-site employer in the United States.
Schott also recognized outgoing Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle, thanking him for his leadership and stewardship of the resort.
According to Schott, Vahle helped shape Walt Disney World’s success, strengthen its internal culture, and position the resort for the opportunities that now lie ahead. Schott said he was honored to follow in Vahle’s footsteps.
Vahle retired after 36 years with The Walt Disney Company, officially concluding his time as Walt Disney World president at the end of July.
Who Is Joe Schott?
Although Schott is returning to the resort where his Disney career began, he brings more than four decades of domestic and international Disney leadership experience with him.
Before becoming Walt Disney World president, Schott served as President of Disney Signature Experiences. That division includes several major Disney vacation and residential businesses, including:
- Disney Cruise Line
- Disney Vacation Club
- Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa
- Adventures by Disney
- National Geographic Expeditions
- Storyliving by Disney
- Golden Oak
While leading Disney Signature Experiences, Schott oversaw a significant period of Disney Cruise Line expansion, including the launches of the Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure. The Disney Adventure marked Disney Cruise Line’s first major entry into the Asian cruise market.
Schott previously served as President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort. During his leadership, the resort underwent major growth that included the opening of the world’s first Zootopia-themed land.
Shanghai Disney Resort also surpassed 100 million guests in under a decade, while additional projects (including a Spider-Man attraction and new hotels) moved forward.
Before his time in Shanghai, Schott served as Chief Operating Officer of Disneyland Paris for five years. He also worked as Executive Managing Director of Walt Disney Attractions Japan, supporting the continued growth of Tokyo Disney Resort.
That means Schott is returning to Florida with experience overseeing Disney resorts, theme parks, hotels, cruise ships, vacation ownership businesses, guided travel programs, and large-scale international expansions.
Schott is taking control of Walt Disney World at one of the most consequential periods in the resort’s recent history.
Disney has described the current development at Magic Kingdom as the largest expansion in the park’s history. New lands and attractions are also under development at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
At Magic Kingdom, Disney is developing Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars-inspired area featuring two attractions. Beyond Big Thunder Mountain, an additional land inspired by classic Disney Villains is planned with two major attractions, dining, and shopping.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is preparing for a Monsters, Inc.-themed land featuring Disney’s first suspended roller coaster. Meanwhile, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is undergoing its transformation from DinoLand U.S.A. into the Tropical Americas, with new experiences inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones.
In other words, Schott is not easing into a quiet leadership period.
He will oversee Walt Disney World while multiple parks undergo major changes, construction affects existing guest areas, and Disney attempts to balance new development with the day-to-day experience of millions of annual visitors.
What Joe Schott’s Return Could Mean for Disney World
Schott’s history as a frontline Cast Member gives his appointment an interesting layer.
He began his career working directly with guests inside Magic Kingdom and is now responsible for the resort’s overall operation. That does not automatically tell us what individual changes he may make, but his stated emphasis on supporting Cast Members and delivering exceptional guest experiences will likely be watched closely by Disney fans.
The timing of his arrival also means that many of the projects completed during the coming years will open under his leadership — even if planning began before he stepped into the position.
That includes some of the largest additions ever proposed for Magic Kingdom, as well as major transformations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Schott ended his first message by thanking the community for its warm welcome and saying he was grateful for the opportunity and excited about what lies ahead.
Considering the amount of construction, expansion, and operational change currently happening around Walt Disney World, there is certainly a lot ahead.
