If you’ve noticed shorter wait times around Orlando’s theme parks this summer, you’re not imagining it, and now Universal is confirming there’s a reason why.

During Comcast’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, Universal executives acknowledged that attendance across the broader Orlando tourism market has been weaker than expected this summer. While the company emphasized that Epic Universe continues to perform well, executives said overall visitation across the Orlando market began slowing in June and has remained softer than anticipated into the third quarter.

These comments add an important piece to the puzzle for theme park fans who have noticed lighter crowds at both Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World throughout the summer.

Speaking during Comcast’s earnings call, executives said “the operating environment for parks has softened more than the company anticipated.” They explained that attendance across the broader Orlando market began to decline in June and that the trend has continued into the current quarter.

Rather than pointing to a single issue, Universal attributed the slowdown to broader economic conditions, including higher fuel prices and weaker consumer sentiment, both of which may be causing families to delay or scale back vacation plans.

Epic Universe Continues to Perform Well

Importantly, Universal made it clear that Epic Universe is not driving the slowdown.

Executives said the new theme park continues to meet internal expectations and has received a strong response from guests since opening. They also noted that Epic Universe is helping increase guest spending across Universal Orlando Resort by encouraging visitors to experience multiple parks during their vacations.

In other words, the company believes the attendance softness reflects a broader decline in Orlando tourism rather than a lack of interest in Epic Universe itself.

The Trend Mirrors What Disney Fans Have Been Seeing

Universal’s comments closely align with recent crowd observations at Walt Disney World.

Recent analyses of posted wait times have shown that June and July 2026 have been among the lightest summer crowd periods in recent years, with average posted waits running approximately 6% to 13% lower than the same timeframe in 2025. Some days have even resembled the traditionally quieter September crowd levels.

That suggests the slowdown isn’t isolated to one resort — it’s affecting Central Florida’s tourism industry as a whole.

Why Are Crowds Lower?

While Universal didn’t point to one definitive cause, executives highlighted two key factors:

• Higher fuel prices increasing the cost of road trips and vacations.
• Weaker consumer confidence leading some families to postpone discretionary travel.

Industry observers have also noted that this summer lacks the type of brand-new, destination-defining attraction that typically drives a significant surge in travel demand across the region, outside of Epic Universe itself. Combined with Florida’s extreme summer heat and rising travel expenses, many families may simply be choosing different vacation windows.

What It Means for Guests

For travelers with upcoming vacations, the news could actually be good.

Lower attendance often translates into:

• Easier dining reservations.
• Better availability for Lightning Lane selections and other experiences.
