After years of living in Woody and Buzz Lightyear’s shadow, one beloved Pixar character is finally taking center stage, and fans are loving the decision.

For nearly 30 years, the Toy Story franchise has revolved around the friendship between Woody and Buzz. But with Toy Story 5 now in theaters, Pixar has officially passed the reins to another fan-favorite toy. In a new behind-the-scenes interview, the filmmakers revealed why Jessie became the emotional heart of the newest film, how the decision happened, and why this story simply couldn’t have been told with anyone else.
If you’ve already seen Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, you probably noticed one major change from previous installments: Jessie is no longer just part of the ensemble — she’s leading the story.

According to Pixar filmmakers, making Jessie the film’s central character wasn’t a last-minute decision. Instead, it grew naturally from where the franchise left off at the end of Toy Story 4.
When Woody chose to remain with Bo Peep, he passed along his sheriff badge to Jessie, symbolically handing her the responsibility of leading Bonnie’s toys. Rather than undoing that emotional ending, Pixar wanted to explore what that leadership actually looks like, and what happens when Jessie is forced to navigate an entirely new challenge.
Jessie Finally Gets the Spotlight
Director Andrew Stanton and producer Jessica Choi explained that the creative team viewed Jessie as the natural successor to Woody’s leadership role.

While Woody and Buzz remain important parts of the story, the filmmakers wanted to give Jessie an opportunity to grow beyond being a supporting character. Her optimism, emotional vulnerability, and history of overcoming abandonment made her uniquely positioned to carry the film’s biggest emotional moments.
The decision also allowed Pixar to tell a story from a fresh perspective without abandoning the heart that has defined the Toy Story franchise for nearly three decades.
A Story About Change and Staying Relevant
Like previous Toy Story films, Toy Story 5 tackles a relatable real-world issue.

This time, the toys are competing with modern technology for children’s attention, as Bonnie becomes increasingly attached to a smart tablet named Lilypad. Instead of simply worrying about being replaced by newer toys, the gang now faces the challenge of staying relevant in a world where screens often replace traditional imaginative play.
For Jessie, that challenge becomes deeply personal.
As Bonnie’s current favorite toy and the group’s leader, she carries the responsibility of keeping everyone together while trying to understand how playtime, and childhood itself, is changing.
Joan Cusack Continues to Define Jessie
Much of Jessie’s enduring popularity comes from Joan Cusack’s energetic and heartfelt performance.

Cusack recently reflected on having voiced Jessie for more than 25 years, saying the character has become part of her own personality — even admitting she now regularly says “Yeehaw!” in everyday life. She also praised Toy Story 5 for allowing Jessie to step into a larger leadership role and appreciated that the film places a female character at the emotional center of the story.
It’s a full-circle moment for a character who first captured audiences’ hearts in Toy Story 2 with one of Pixar’s most emotional backstories.
A New Era for the Toy Story Franchise
While Woody and Buzz remain iconic faces of Pixar Animation Studios, Toy Story 5 signals that the franchise is willing to evolve.
By allowing Jessie to lead, Pixar honors everything that came before while giving longtime fans a fresh perspective on characters they’ve loved for generations. It’s a natural continuation of the story that began when Woody handed over his sheriff badge, and one that gives Jessie the opportunity to prove she’s every bit the leader audiences have always believed she could be.

Whether you’ve followed the franchise since 1995 or are introducing a new generation to Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, Toy Story 5 offers a heartfelt reminder that every toy, and every hero, deserves their chance to lead.
