Good news, pet lovers — Max and the gang are officially making a comeback!

After years of speculation, Illumination has confirmed that The Secret Life of Pets 3 is officially in active development. The exciting update came directly from Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, who also revealed that franchise director Chris Renaud is returning to lead the third film.
According to reports, the studio intentionally waited before moving forward with another sequel, explaining that the team wanted to find a story that truly earned its place rather than simply making another installment. Now, Illumination believes it has found the right idea and is already well underway developing the project with Renaud.
Chris Renaud directed the original The Secret Life of Pets in 2016 as well as The Secret Life of Pets 2 in 2019, making his return welcome news for longtime fans of the franchise.

While no release date, plot details, or returning cast members have been announced, the confirmation marks the first official update on the beloved franchise in years. Meledandri also shared that Illumination is actively developing Sing 3, alongside an all-new original animated film.

With The Secret Life of Pets 3 now officially on Illumination’s slate, fans can start looking forward to another adventure with their favorite four-legged friends.
