Disneyland’s classic Autopia cars are officially running out of road.

One of Disneyland Park’s most nostalgic Tomorrowland attractions is headed for a major change, and this time, there’s a real deadline attached. Autopia, the opening-day Disneyland ride where generations of kids have gotten behind the wheel for the first time, must retire its current gas-powered cars by early 2027 — or the attraction will have to close until the change is complete.
Disneyland’s Autopia attraction is facing a February 1, 2027, deadline to retire its gas-powered vehicles, according to a compliance plan tied to an agreement with the California Air Resources Board.

That means the current version of Autopia (the one powered by gasoline engines) cannot continue operating past that date unless the gas engines are removed or replaced. If Disneyland does not complete the transition in time, the ride would need to close until the attraction is brought into compliance.
Autopia Is Going Fully Electric
Disneyland has already confirmed that Autopia is moving away from gas-powered engines and toward fully electric ride vehicles.
The resort has said work is underway on the design, engineering, and testing of a fully electric Autopia vehicle prototype. That means this is not expected to be a hybrid update or a partial change — Disneyland is preparing to replace the attraction’s current gas engines with electric technology.

This is a big shift for one of Disneyland’s most recognizable Tomorrowland rides, especially because Autopia has been part of the park since opening day in 1955.
Why Autopia Is Being Updated
The deadline stems from a California Air Resources Board settlement connected to Autopia’s gas-powered engines. Disney previously paid a $56,250 penalty after issues were identified involving the certification of Honda-built engines used for the attraction.

According to reporting on the compliance plan, Honda “failed to certify” the engines due to what was described as an administrative error. Honda reportedly notified Disney in August 2023, and Disney then communicated the issue to the California Air Resources Board.
As part of the settlement, Disney agreed to retire the gas-engine-powered Autopia fleet and continue searching for suitable clean technology.
What This Means For Disneyland Guests
For now, Disneyland has not announced an official Autopia closure date.

That is important because the February 1, 2027, deadline does not automatically mean Autopia is closing permanently. Instead, Disneyland must either complete the transition away from gas engines by that date or close the current gas-powered version of the ride until the electric conversion is finished.
So if you are planning a Disneyland trip before early 2027, Autopia may still be available depending on construction, testing, and operational timelines. But guests should absolutely keep an eye on Disneyland refurbishment calendars and official park updates as the deadline gets closer.
A Huge Tomorrowland Change For A Classic Disneyland Ride
Autopia has always been a unique piece of Disneyland history. It is one of the park’s original 1955 attractions and remains especially popular with younger guests who love the chance to “drive” their own car through Tomorrowland.

But in a land themed around the future, gas-powered vehicles have felt increasingly outdated. A fully electric Autopia would bring the attraction more in line with modern transportation trends while preserving the kid-friendly driving experience that has made the ride a Disneyland staple for decades.
This update also connects to Disney’s broader sustainability goals, including the company’s effort to reach net-zero emissions by 2030.
Could Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland Speedway Be Next?
Disneyland’s Autopia is not the only Disney Parks attraction still using gas-powered vehicles.
At Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland Speedway continues to operate with gas-powered cars, and Disney has not announced a similar electric conversion for the Florida attraction at this time.
Still, Disneyland’s Autopia update will likely spark more conversation among Disney fans about whether Tomorrowland Speedway could eventually receive a similar upgrade.

With the February 1, 2027, deadline now in view, Disneyland fans should expect more updates about Autopia’s electric vehicle conversion in the coming months.
Whether that means a temporary closure, a phased rollout, or more details about the new electric vehicles, one thing is clear: the gas-powered era of Disneyland’s Autopia is nearing the finish line.
