Universal Destinations & Experiences is making a major leadership move as its theme park brands continue expanding around the world.

Donna Mirus Bates

Donna Mirus Bates has been promoted to Global Franchise Strategy Officer for Universal Destinations & Experiences, taking on a newly created role focused on the future of Universal’s biggest intellectual properties.

In this new position, Bates will oversee franchise strategy and management as well as strategic partnerships for Universal Destinations & Experiences. She will report to Vince Klaseus, who leads Universal’s franchise, products, and partnerships efforts.

The move comes during a major growth period for Universal’s theme park division, with Epic Universe now open in Orlando, Universal Horror Unleashed expanding the company’s year-round horror presence, Universal Kids Resort moving forward in Texas, and additional global projects continuing to build momentum.

Bates’ role will focus on guiding long-term franchise strategy across Universal’s portfolio of brands and intellectual properties. That means helping shape how Universal’s major franchises connect across theme parks, experiences, consumer products, partnerships, licensing, and fan engagement.

Before this promotion, Bates served in senior leadership roles at Universal, including work in strategic partnerships, communications, marketing communications, and content development. Her experience has included working with Universal teams across Orlando, Hollywood, Japan, Singapore, and Beijing to help maintain global consistency across key brand areas.

In her own announcement, Bates said she is excited and grateful to continue working with Universal in this new chapter, while also thanking Alice Norsworthy for more than a decade of leadership and partnership.

The newly created role signals how important franchise strategy has become for Universal as the company continues turning its biggest entertainment brands into fully realized destinations, products, and immersive fan experiences.

From Harry Potter and Jurassic World to Super Nintendo World, Universal Monsters, Fast & Furious, How to Train Your Dragon, Wicked, and beyond, Universal’s brands are no longer just living on screens. They are becoming lands, attractions, merchandise collections, dining experiences, hotels, and global entertainment ecosystems.
