Leave it to Disney fans to get excited about…trash cans.

EPCOT trash cans

But if you’ve spent any time in the Disney Parks community, you already know that Disney trash cans have developed a fan following of their own over the years.

Now, EPCOT guests may notice a brand-new style of solar-powered trash and recycling bins popping up throughout World Showcase. The updated containers have recently appeared near Port of Entry, Disney Traders, Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Company, the Odyssey Pavilion, Mexico Pavilion, and other areas around World Showcase.

More Than Just a Trash Can

These aren’t your typical Disney trash cans.

The new units feature built-in solar panels on top that help power an internal compactor system. The compactors allow the bins to hold significantly more waste than traditional trash cans before needing to be emptied, helping Cast Members manage busy festival crowds more efficiently. Similar smart bins have previously been tested elsewhere in EPCOT.

The bins are also hands-free. Guests use a foot pedal near the bottom of the container to open the waste compartment, reducing the need to touch lids or flaps while disposing of trash.

Some versions even feature status lights that help indicate whether the unit is operating normally or requires attention.

A Small Detail Fans Will Appreciate

Perhaps the most notable detail for longtime EPCOT fans is the return of the World Showcase medallions on the front of the containers.

Many guests noticed last year when several World Showcase trash can medallions were replaced with simpler sticker designs. The new bins bring back a decorative compass-style World Showcase emblem that better fits the surrounding area.

Based on the photos, the updated bronze-toned finish and themed medallions help the containers blend much more naturally into the World Showcase environment than standard municipal-style bins.

Helping EPCOT Stay Cleaner During Festivals

The timing makes sense.

With EPCOT hosting festivals throughout much of the year, trash and recycling containers often see heavy use from guests carrying food booth plates, cups, and festival merchandise packaging.

The combination of solar power, compacting technology, and fullness monitoring could help reduce overflow while allowing custodial teams to respond more efficiently when bins need servicing. Similar Bigbelly smart bins have been praised for their ability to compact trash and notify maintenance teams when they are nearing capacity.

The Most Disney Fan Story Ever

Let’s be honest: only at Disney would a new trash can become news.

But for a company famous for paying attention to the smallest details, even something as simple as a trash can can become part of the guest experience.

EPCOT

And if Disney is going to introduce high-tech solar-powered compactors throughout EPCOT, at least they remembered to make them look like they belong in World Showcase.

We’ll continue keeping an eye on EPCOT improvements, World Showcase updates, festival changes, and all the little details Disney fans love to spot. Be sure to check back with Theme Park Scope for more Walt Disney World news and updates.
