Disney’s newest witches have worked their magic, and apparently, audiences are under their spell! Just weeks after its Halloween-season debut, Disney has officially renewed Coven Academy for a second season, bringing more supernatural mysteries, forbidden romance, and magical drama to Disney+ and Hulu.
The announcement arrived on October 26, 2026, less than a month after the series premiered on Freeform on October 1. And with millions of viewing hours already recorded, it looks like Disney has found a promising new favorite among younger audiences.
But what makes this renewal particularly interesting isn’t just the show’s popularity. It’s the unusual way Disney introduced the series, combining traditional television storytelling with shorter, binge-friendly chapters designed for a generation accustomed to consuming entertainment in smaller doses.
Here’s everything we know about Coven Academy Season 2, including the show’s impressive streaming numbers, returning characters, and what could happen next.
Coven Academy Has Officially Been Renewed for Season 2
Disney has given Coven Academy the green light for a second season following a successful debut across Freeform, Disney+, and Hulu. The supernatural young adult drama premiered on Freeform on October 1, 2026, before its complete first season became available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu the following day.

Set in New Orleans, the series follows a group of teenage witches and warlocks attending Crescent Veil Academy, an elite boarding school where mastering magic is only part of surviving adolescence. Between dangerous supernatural forces, complicated friendships, romantic entanglements, and mysteries surrounding their pasts, the students quickly discover that life at a magical academy comes with some very real consequences.
At the center of the story is Briar, a fiercely independent teenager who discovers she has magical abilities and becomes connected to a powerful coven alongside fellow students Sasha and Tegan. Their journey involves protecting New Orleans from ancient supernatural threats while navigating the relationships and secrets that make their lives increasingly complicated. The good news for fans is that their story isn’t over.
Disney has confirmed another season, although a premiere date, episode count, and production schedule have not yet been announced.
The Show’s Streaming Numbers Explain the Quick Renewal
One of the biggest reasons behind Disney’s decision appears to be the series’ strong early performance. According to figures shared in connection with the renewal, Coven Academy generated 20.3 million global viewing hours across Disney+ and Hulu during its first three weeks.
The series also reportedly accumulated approximately 11 million viewing hours during its first week. But its success goes beyond total streaming time. Nielsen data showed that Coven Academy ranked as the No. 1 streaming series among viewers ages 12 to 17 during its premiere weekend, based on views rather than hours watched. It also placed among the top five streaming titles across all viewers using that same measurement.

Another interesting detail is how many younger viewers watched alongside adults. According to Nielsen, approximately half of viewers ages 12 to 17 and nearly two-thirds of viewers ages 6 to 11 watched with an adult. That suggests the series is reaching beyond a strictly teenage audience and becoming something families are choosing to watch together.
For Disney, those numbers offer an encouraging sign that a new original supernatural series can attract viewers without relying on an established franchise.
Disney Tried Something Different With the First Season
One of the most unusual things about Coven Academy is its episode format. Rather than releasing a traditional season made up entirely of 40- or 60-minute episodes, Disney structured the first season into 21 shorter chapters. The format was designed to make the story approachable for younger audiences while still allowing the writers to develop a longer, interconnected narrative.
And Disney didn’t limit its promotional strategy to television and streaming platforms. The first chapter was also released through TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, introducing the series to viewers who might not have discovered it through a traditional television premiere.
According to Disney’s reported figures, that chapter generated more than 30 million views across social media platforms. That’s an important distinction from the show’s streaming numbers: the 30 million figure represents social media views, not additional hours watched on Disney+ or Hulu. The approach gave viewers a chance to sample the series through familiar platforms before committing to the full story.
It’s a strategy that could become increasingly important as Disney looks for new ways to introduce original programming to younger audiences.
Who Stars in Coven Academy?
The first season features a mix of rising young performers and recognizable television stars. The principal cast includes:
- Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar: A teenager who discovers she’s a witch and becomes deeply involved in the mysteries surrounding Crescent Veil Academy.
- Jordan Leftwich as Sasha: A powerful young witch with the ability to read minds and one of Briar’s closest allies.
- Ora Duplass as Tegan: A time-bending witch whose abilities and personality make her an essential member of the coven.
- Malachi Barton as Jake: A charismatic warlock with a dangerous side and complicated connections to Briar.
- Louis Thresher as Ollie: A newly turned vampire whose relationships add another layer of supernatural drama.
- Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves: The mysterious and commanding head of Crescent Veil Academy.
The series also features Devon Sawa as Mr. Cole, a warlock professor, alongside additional recurring characters. Disney has not yet released a complete Season 2 cast announcement, so fans should not assume every first-season performer is confirmed to return. However, the show’s renewal means there is now an opportunity to continue exploring the characters and relationships introduced during the first season.
What Could Happen in Coven Academy Season 2?
Disney has not released an official Season 2 synopsis, but series creator Tim Federle has already discussed his interest in continuing the story. Federle, who previously created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, has explained that the first season was developed with the possibility of a longer narrative in mind. Rather than treating the initial chapters as a completely self-contained story, the creative team wanted to establish characters, relationships, and mysteries that could develop over multiple seasons.
The first season introduces significant questions about Briar’s family history, the supernatural forces surrounding Crescent Veil Academy, and the relationships among the school’s witches, warlocks, and vampires. Federle has also discussed the possibility of further exploring a powerful mother-daughter relationship and the consequences of their combined abilities. Those comments offer some insight into the creative direction being considered, but Disney has not officially confirmed specific Season 2 storylines. For now, the biggest confirmed development is that the series will continue. And with the first season designed to establish a larger supernatural world, there’s plenty of room for the next chapter to expand the mythology of Crescent Veil Academy.
When Will Coven Academy Season 2 Premiere?
Disney has not announced a release date for Season 2. The company also hasn’t confirmed when filming will begin, how many chapters the new season will contain, or whether it will follow the same release strategy as Season 1. The first season premiered on Freeform before arriving on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. Disney’s renewal announcement confirms the series will continue, but additional distribution and scheduling details will need to be announced closer to the new season’s release.

In the meantime, Season 1 is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu, making it easy for viewers to catch up before the next installment. And with Halloween just days away, the timing couldn’t be better for anyone looking for a new supernatural series to add to their watchlist.
My Take
I think one of the most interesting things about this announcement is how quickly Disney decided to renew Coven Academy.
We’re not talking about a series that spent months waiting to find out whether it would return. Disney gave it another season less than four weeks after its premiere, and that says a lot about how encouraged the company must be by its early performance. What I find especially refreshing is that this is an original series rather than another reboot, sequel, or spin-off of something Disney already owns.
Don’t get me wrong, I love revisiting familiar Disney stories. But I also think the company needs to keep investing in new characters and worlds that younger audiences can discover and make their own. And Coven Academy feels like a smart fit for that. There’s clearly an audience for supernatural teen dramas, especially ones that combine friendship, romance, mystery, and just enough darkness to make things interesting.
I also appreciate that the series isn’t trying to be another version of Hocus Pocus. It’s developing its own identity, with a magical boarding school, New Orleans setting, and an interconnected group of young characters.
But the part of this announcement that really caught my attention was the short-chapter format. I think Disney may have found an interesting middle ground between traditional television and the way younger audiences are consuming entertainment today. There’s a big difference between creating a compelling story in shorter installments and simply making everything shorter because attention spans are changing.
If those chapters still build toward meaningful character development and a satisfying larger narrative, I can see why the format would appeal to viewers who enjoy watching a little at a time. And the social media strategy is equally interesting.
Making the first chapter available on platforms like TikTok and Instagram gives potential viewers an opportunity to discover the show without immediately asking them to commit to another subscription or a full television episode. For a brand-new series, that kind of accessibility can make a real difference.
Of course, strong opening numbers don’t automatically guarantee a long-running success. The real challenge will be keeping audiences invested once the initial curiosity wears off. But I think renewing the series now gives Disney an opportunity to build on that momentum rather than letting viewers lose interest while waiting for an answer. And personally, I’d love to see Disney continue taking chances on original shows like this.
Not every Disney success story needs to begin with a familiar character or a decades-old franchise. Sometimes, the next big thing just needs a little magic and the opportunity to grow.
