Every so often, a permit turns up that makes parents everywhere sit straight up like they just heard the snack cart. This is one of those.

A new Walt Disney Imagineering permit is suggesting that a playground area may be planned for Monstropolis, the Monsters, Inc. land taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

So what does the permit say? The permit lists Landscape Structures, Inc. as the contractor, a company that specializes in playground equipment. The location is described as the former site of the Stage 1 Company Store, the Muppets shop that was demolished after Muppets Courtyard closed last year to make way for Monstropolis. That spot is reportedly marked by a plaza structure outside Harryhausen’s.

One more fun wrinkle. Concept art for Monstropolis shows a covered area near the Monsters, Inc. building that could be the kind of space where kids might play. But that area looks to be fairly far from the store’s former address, so it is entirely possible these are two different things. Imagineers have a way of leaving us with more questions than answers, and I respect it.

Let’s zoom out for a second, because the bigger picture is worth remembering. Disney has said that parts of Monstropolis are planned to open in 2027, according to the company’s August 2026 D23 update. No exact opening date has been announced, and plans can change. The announced pieces include the Glob Theater show Welcome to Monstropolis, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club, the Scareporium shop, and Harryhausen’s Restaurant. The door coaster is still under construction and is not part of that 2027 phase. So if a playground does appear, it would be joining a land that is still very much a work in progress.

Now for what I really care about, which is the family side of this. Hollywood Studios has a lot going for it, but it is not the park most people picture when they think about places for little kids to burn off energy between rides and shows. I have not seen anything official about what a Monstropolis play space would be like, so I cannot tell you about age ranges, height rules, or how big it might be. What I can say is that a dedicated spot where kids can climb, run, and wiggle while grown-ups sit and finally drink their water would be a welcome addition for lots of families. Anyone who has tried to keep a toddler happy in a ride queue knows exactly what I mean.

I would also gently remind everyone that permits sometimes change, shrink, or never turn into what we imagined. A permit is a snapshot of a plan at a moment in time. I will happily get excited, but I will also wait for Disney to say it out loud.

Here is where I land. I am cautiously, family-friendly excited. A playground in a Monsters, Inc. land feels like a natural fit, since the whole world is built around kids, laughter, and a pretty great workplace-comedy premise. But I am going to hold my enthusiasm at a calm simmer until Disney confirms something. If it turns out to be a couple of fun interactive pieces rather than a full playground, that is still a win for families, and honestly, a nice little pocket of fun is better than nothing. If it grows into something bigger, even better. Either way, I will take anything that gives the grown-ups a few minutes to sit down.

What do you think, parents? Would a play area in Monstropolis make your Hollywood Studios day easier, or are you saving your excitement for the door coaster?
