Okay, cruise fans, come sit down, because Disney just gave us a ship name and a stern character duo that I did not see coming but absolutely adore.

The first ship for Disney Cruise Line Japan is officially called Disney Imagination, and the characters on the stern are none other than Ariel and Sebastian.

Let me give you the quick rundown first. Disney Imagination is set to debut in Tokyo in spring 2029, and Disney describes it as the fifth ship in the Wish class. It will be operated by Oriental Land Co., the company that owns and runs Tokyo Disney Resort under license from Disney, as Disney Cruise Line Japan, a Disney-branded business. The name was announced at a ceremony in Tokyo, with Oriental Land Co. leadership and Disney Signature Experiences executives on hand.

Now for the part everyone is going to be squealing about. The stern art features Ariel from The Little Mermaid. In the artwork Disney shared, she’s joined by Sebastian and friends, and she uses her dinglehopper to draw the ship’s name. Disney says it’s a tribute to her curiosity, creativity, and adventurous spirit, which, honestly, fits a ship called Imagination pretty perfectly. Because it’s her thing, right? She collects stuff, she wonders about everything, she’s absolutely certain there’s more out there. A sea-going version of that energy feels right.

If you look at the two images Disney released, and both are marked as artist concept only, you can see a ship with a deep navy hull and gold trim (those classic Disney Cruise Line touches) with Mickey-head funnels and a waterslide up top. The stern shows Ariel and Sebastian beside the words Disney Imagination TOKYO. I want to be careful here, since these are concept renderings and not the finished ship, so details can absolutely change before it sets sail.

Speaking of details, here’s what hasn’t been shared yet, at least that I could confirm. Disney hasn’t given the ship’s size or guest capacity. There’s no announced itinerary or pricing, and no word on when bookings open. Tokyo is named as where it debuts, but I haven’t seen a specific homeport terminal announced, so I’m not going to guess. As for the Wish class, it’s the same family as the Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and Disney Destiny, so it’s reasonable to expect the same general style of ship, but I’d treat anything more specific as unconfirmed until Disney says so.

For some context, this has been a long time coming. Disney and Oriental Land Co. first announced Japan cruise vacations back in July 2024, and Oriental Land established Disney Cruise Line Japan earlier this year. So this ship name is the first big, real, tangible piece of that plan, and it’s fun to finally have something to picture.

Disney’s Natacha Rafalski, president of Disney Signature Experiences, said the ship will extend the magic of Disney cruising to fans in new markets, giving Japanese guests a chance to take a Disney vacation at sea. And that’s a big deal. Disney Cruise Line has mostly sailed from Florida and a handful of other ports, so a ship built around Tokyo Disney Resort fans is a brand new chapter.

Let me say what I’d be thinking if I were planning a trip with kids. Ariel and Sebastian are such a smart pick for the stern. Little ones recognize them instantly, and a ship that literally sails on the sea with the Little Mermaid on the back is a photo op waiting to happen. But we’re still waiting for more info on kids’ clubs, age rules, or onboard activities for this ship, so I’ll let you know when we hear more. For now, the waterslide in the concept art is a sign that it’s likely to have something fun for the family crowd, but that’s me reading a picture, not an announcement.

Disney

I love this. Truly. A ship named Imagination with Ariel drawing the name with a dinglehopper is just so charming, and it’s the kind of detail that makes Disney cruising feel special instead of just big. I also think it’s smart to give Japan its own identity rather than copy and paste a Florida ship. The Tokyo in the stern art tells you this is meant to feel like home for those guests.

Is it going to be easy for American fans to sail on? I don’t know, and nobody has said yet. Spring 2029 feels like forever from now, and I’d love to know who gets to book first. But I’m excited for the fans in Japan, and I’m definitely going to be watching for every update, because this ship has my attention.

So what do you think? Are you team Ariel on the stern, or were you hoping for a different character? Tell me in the comments, and keep checking back with Theme Park Scope, because I’ll be sharing everything we learn about Disney Imagination as soon as there’s more to share.
