If you have ever refreshed a Disney ticket page and watched an option vanish while you were still deciding whether you could justify the price, today’s news is going to feel painfully familiar.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass has officially sold out for several dates over Columbus Day weekend at Walt Disney World, and it also marks the first Premier Pass sellouts since Easter weekend back in April.

First, a quick refresher for anyone who has never looked at it. Premier Pass is the top tier of Disney’s skip-the-line offerings. It gives you one-time access to the Lightning Lane for every eligible attraction in a park for the entire day, so you are not booking return times ride by ride. It also costs a lot more than the other options, and prices change by park and date. For a sense of the range, earlier this year Premier Pass ran from roughly $139 to $199 at Animal Kingdom and $219 to $249 at EPCOT, up to $319 to $339 at Hollywood Studios and as high as $419 to $449 at Magic Kingdom, all plus tax.

Here is what is sold out for Columbus Day weekend, though. On Friday, October 9, Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are sold out. On Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT are all sold out. On Monday, October 12, which is Columbus Day itself, Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are sold out. That means Magic Kingdom has no Premier Pass available at all from Friday through Monday. There were a few dates earlier this week that were already showing as sold out, and this stretch tends to be one of the busier weeks of the fall season.

This is the kind of detail worth paying attention to even if you were never going to buy Premier Pass. A sellout does not guarantee exactly how crowded each park will feel, since plenty of people who buy it are simply paying for convenience on a day they already planned to visit. But it is a pretty reliable signal that a lot of guests are heading to the parks and that many of them want to save time in line. It’s certainly a fair indicator that the parks will be very busy over October 9 through 12.

Crowds

There is one more useful way to read the Magic Kingdom sellout. Based on the October party calendar we covered recently, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is on Friday, October 9 and again on Tuesday, October 13, but not on October 10, 11, or 12. On party nights, the park closes to non-party guests at 6 PM, which shortens the day for everyone without a party ticket. On the non-party days, the park runs its full schedule, which gives Premier Pass buyers a longer day to use it. That is my own observation rather than something Disney has said, but it fits the pattern of why those weekend dates went first.

This is also not a one-off. Earlier this year, Premier Pass at Magic Kingdom sold out for a stretch of about a week in February around Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day weekend. It seems to follow holidays, long weekends, and school breaks, so Columbus Day fits right in.

If you were hoping to use Premier Pass and missed it, you still have options. Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass may be available for your date, although it is worth remembering those can sell out as well. If you can, buying as far ahead of your trip as Disney allows is the safest approach. You can also consider shifting your visit to a less crowded day if your schedule has any flexibility, or using the free tools we have all been using for years, like arriving at rope drop and prioritizing your must-do rides early.
