Disney+ just greenlit a brand-new Darkwing Duck animated series, and somehow the cast includes Luke Skywalker himself as the mask-wearing menace to evil.
If you grew up shouting “let’s get dangerous” at your TV in the early ’90s, buckle up, because this one’s got a cast list that reads like a fever dream in the best possible way.
Mark Hamill has been cast as the voice of Drake Mallard, better known as Darkwing Duck, taking over a role originated by Jim Cummings back in 1991. Seth Rogen is voicing sidekick Launchpad McQuack, and Lizzy Caplan is playing Drake’s adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard. Rounding out the main cast is Lilimar as a brand-new character named Duckie, alongside Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Kathryn Newton, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich, and Nat Faxon in supporting roles.
The official logline gives us our first real hint at the plot: Darkwing Duck has spent the last 35 years trapped in an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits, and it takes a rebellious teenager named Duckie, who somehow knows all about his heroic past, to drag him back into action. From there, the show promises Darkwing and his old allies squaring off against classic villains like Negaduck and Megavolt, with Launchpad, Gosalyn, and Morgana all along for the ride.
Rogen is executive producing through his Point Grey Pictures banner, alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, and Gabby Grantham, with Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui serving as EPs on the series itself. Original Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones consulted on the new version, and he’s already given it his blessing, saying he’s excited to see the character getting dangerous again in a whole new series.
Here’s the part that actually surprised me the most: this revival has technically been in the works since 2020. It grew directly out of the success of the DuckTales reboot, which had already folded Darkwing Duck into its own continuity as a fan-favorite guest character before Disney decided the mallard deserved his own solo spotlight again. Getting a project like this from first announcement to an actual greenlight over roughly six years isn’t unusual in animation, but it does mean fans have technically been waiting on this one far longer than today’s headline suggests.
The original Darkwing Duck ran for 91 episodes across Disney Channel, ABC, and syndication between 1991 and 1993, and it’s held up as one of the more beloved entries in the Disney Afternoon block, right alongside DuckTales and Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. No premiere date has been announced yet, so there’s nothing to add to your calendar just yet, but with a cast and creative team this stacked, this is shaping up to be one of the bigger animation revivals Disney+ has greenlit in a while.
