If you’re the type of Disneyland regular who treats a walk through the Temple of the Forbidden Eye as a non-negotiable part of any Adventureland loop, I have bad news and slightly-less-bad news.
Bad news: it’s closed. Slightly-less-bad news: this ride has spent the last year and a half quietly getting fixed up piece by piece, so a closure right now doesn’t feel nearly as alarming as it might have a couple of years ago.
As of Tuesday, September 8, Indiana Jones Adventure in Disneyland Park’s Adventureland has wooden closure walls and fencing up around the attraction and its entrance, with standing signs telling guests “Attention! Not offering tours today.” This isn’t a surprise (the closure was first reported back in late July), but now it’s officially underway, and there’s no reopening date attached to it yet.
Disney did dress up the construction walls with an in-theme sign, staying fully in character as an invitation from Sallah to a future “grand tour” of the temple, complete with a wink toward the Fabled Blessings of Mara (eternal youth, wealth, and a peek into the future among them) and a cheeky “Fall of 1935” timestamp. It’s a small touch, but it’s the kind of detail that makes even a plywood construction wall feel like part of the story instead of an eyesore.
Here’s the part worth knowing if you weren’t tracking the ride’s recent history: Indiana Jones Adventure has actually been on something of a comeback tour behind the scenes. The ride’s full pre-show returned in early 2025 after being missing for five years. The bridge effect, a classic moment in the ride that had been down for years, got restored back in January of this year. And just this past April, the props in the exit queue scene got refreshed. Layered on top of that, the ride already went through a month-long refurbishment in early 2025 and a shorter two-day refurb this past December.
Taken together, that’s not a ride in decline — it’s a ride that’s been getting steadily stitched back together, effect by effect, after years of pieces quietly going dark. A new refurbishment closure, without an announced return date, is obviously never fun news for anyone planning a Disneyland trip in the near term. But given the pattern here, there’s a real chance this closure is more of the same restoration work rather than anything to be worried about long-term.
This closure comes as Disney’s building out an entirely new Indiana Jones experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, replacing DINOSAUR with a new story and an animatronic Harrison Ford as Indy himself. Disneyland’s original Temple of the Forbidden Eye isn’t going anywhere, but it’s a good reminder that Disney’s clearly still invested in the franchise across both coasts, not just maintaining the classic version but actively expanding it.
