Walt Disney World just opened applications for the spring 2027 Disney College Program…

…and there’s a genuinely significant eligibility change buried in the fine print that’s already got prospective applicants upset.

For anyone unfamiliar, the Disney College Program is a semester-long internship where participants work in the theme parks or resorts, live in Disney-provided housing close by, and can earn college credit alongside non-credit learning sessions focused on Disney history, leadership, and hospitality. It’s genuinely become a talent pipeline for the company. A lot of full-time Disney employees started here, myself included, and it remains one of the more beloved ways to break into the company.

Here’s the change that matters most, starting with spring 2027, applicants who have already graduated college must have done so no more than 12 months before the application launch date, which in this case was August 17, 2026. That means anyone who graduated before August 17, 2025 is no longer eligible to apply for this round. This is a real rollback from where things have stood recently — previous semesters allowed graduates up to 24 months post-graduation to apply, a policy that had been in place since the Program’s pandemic-era reinstatement, specifically designed to catch students who’d missed their window during the shutdown. A lot of prospective applicants had come to treat that 24-month rule as permanent, since it held steady through the fall 2026 semester, and plenty of people had shaped their post-grad plans around it. Reaction on Reddit has been rough, with several would-be applicants describing themselves as devastated or blindsided by the sudden switch back to the older 12-month standard.

The rest of the eligibility requirements are staying put. Applicants need to be at least 18 at the time of application, currently enrolled and working toward a degree (or within that new 12-month graduation window), have completed at least one term or 6 credit hours post-high-school before their program start date, remain in good academic standing, and hold valid work authorization for the full length of the program. Disney still does not sponsor visas for this program, so international students need to confirm eligibility with their school’s Designated School Official before applying.

Spring 2027 arrival dates are set for January 5th, 11th, 19th, or 25th, or February 1st, 8th, or 15th, 2027, with departure dates varying based on which arrival window you select. Programs typically run 4 to 8 months, with the possibility of extending up to a full year, and College Program cast members currently earn $19 an hour.

There’s also a brand-new role tied to this application cycle, and it’s exclusive to Disney College Program alumni or currently enrolled participants: Premium Services VIP Tour Support. This one’s specifically built around supporting VIP tour guides across Walt Disney World rather than the standard ride ops, food and beverage, merchandise, or custodial assignments most participants get placed into. Responsibilities split into two main buckets. On the valet side, cast members in this role greet arriving and departing guests, operate vehicles ranging from midsize SUVs to extra-large vans (though they won’t be driving guests themselves), and handle the logistics of getting vehicles in and out of tight parking situations efficiently. On the parade and fireworks side, they’re responsible for securing viewing areas on behalf of park operations, transporting equipment to those locations, checking in guests through an app-based manifest system, and staying with VIP Tour guests through the full parade or fireworks viewing experience. Worth noting: this role does not train or identify participants as an actual VIP Tour Guide…it’s built as support and enhancement for that operation rather than a path into guiding tours directly. Arrivals for this specific role begin in January 2027, with departure no earlier than May 2027, and the same extension possibilities apply.

Between the tightened graduation window and the new alumni-exclusive role, this application cycle is bringing a mix of disappointment and opportunity depending on where you land in the eligibility requirements.
