Ahsoka Tano’s fight against Grand Admiral Thrawn is far from over, and this time, Anakin Skywalker is coming along for the ride.

Disney

Lucasfilm brought Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 to D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and after nearly three years of waiting since the first season ended on one massive cliffhanger, we finally have our first trailer…AND an official release date!

Series creator Dave Filoni was joined onstage by Rosario Dawson, Hayden Christensen, and Eman Esfandi, who play Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, and Ezra Bridger, respectively, to offer fans a first glimpse at what’s coming next.

And things are about to get considerably bigger.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 premieres January 20, 2027, exclusively on Disney+.

This wasn’t simply another behind-the-scenes tease.

Lucasfilm officially released the first teaser trailer for Season 2 during the D23 presentation, giving us our best look yet at what happens after Ahsoka, Sabine, and Grand Admiral Thrawn’s stories were left in very different places at the end of Season 1.

And according to Rosario Dawson, fans should expect the scope of the series to grow considerably.

Dawson told the D23 audience that Season 2 is “massive,” teasing higher stakes, larger battles, and the growing threat Thrawn poses to Ahsoka and the galaxy.

Disney

That last part is particularly important because Thrawn isn’t stranded anymore.

He’s back.

Grand Admiral Thrawn Is Going to War

Season 1 ended with Grand Admiral Thrawn successfully escaping Peridea and returning to the main Star Wars galaxy, while Ahsoka and Sabine were left behind.

Season 2 will deal with the consequences.

The new trailer makes it clear that Thrawn’s threat to the New Republic is becoming much more serious, with Lars Mikkelsen returning as the formidable Imperial leader.

That puts Ahsoka and her allies in a race to deal with a threat that fans of Star Wars Rebels have been waiting years to see unfold in live action.

And this time, the conflict looks considerably less contained.

The first footage teases a larger-scale confrontation between Thrawn’s forces and the New Republic, pushing the series closer toward the all-out conflict that has been building across this era of Star Wars storytelling.

Hayden Christensen Is Returning as Anakin Skywalker

One of Season 1’s biggest surprises is officially carrying over.

Hayden Christensen returns as Anakin Skywalker in Season 2.

Christensen joined Dawson and Esfandi onstage at D23, and the new trailer confirms that Anakin will once again be part of Ahsoka’s story.

Disney

Exactly how much we’ll see of him remains a mystery.

Season 1 used Anakin in one of the show’s most memorable sequences, reuniting master and apprentice inside the mysterious World Between Worlds while also revisiting moments from Ahsoka’s past during the Clone Wars.

The new season appears ready to continue exploring that relationship rather than treating Anakin’s Season 1 appearance as a one-time event.

Disney

And considering where Ahsoka currently finds herself, that could become particularly important.

Rory McCann Takes Over as Baylan Skoll

D23 also gave us our first substantial look at Rory McCann as Baylan Skoll.

The Game of Thrones actor is taking over the role following the death of Ray Stevenson, who portrayed Baylan throughout Season 1 and died before the series premiered.

Disney

The trailer shows McCann’s Baylan in a snowy environment as the character continues the mysterious journey that began during the first season.

Filoni also took time during D23 to honor Stevenson and explain why Baylan’s story needed to continue, describing the character as an important parallel to Ahsoka.

That unfinished story is one of Season 2’s biggest mysteries.

The Mortis Gods Are Still VERY Important

Remember that final shot of Baylan?

At the end of Season 1, he stood atop an enormous statue of the Father, overlooking Peridea while statues representing the Mortis gods loomed around him.

That wasn’t exactly subtle.

Disney

And D23 certainly isn’t moving away from that imagery.

The Ahsoka presentation itself placed Dawson, Christensen, and Esfandi on a stage surrounded by mist and carvings representing the Mortis gods, once again drawing attention to this particularly mystical corner of Star Wars mythology.

The Father, Son, and Daughter were originally introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and are deeply connected to the Force.

Exactly what Baylan is searching for on Peridea (and how the Mortis mythology connects to Ahsoka’s next chapter) remains one of the biggest unanswered questions heading into Season 2.

Ezra Bridger Is Back Home — But Ahsoka and Sabine Aren’t

Season 1 finally accomplished something Star Wars Rebels fans had been waiting years to see:

Ezra Bridger made it home.

Eman Esfandi returns as Ezra in Season 2 and joined the cast onstage at D23.

There’s just one rather large problem.

While Ezra escaped Peridea aboard Thrawn’s ship and reunited with Hera Syndulla, Ahsoka, and Sabine are now stranded in the distant galaxy instead.

That leaves our heroes split across two galaxies as Thrawn begins making his next move.

Disney

Season 2 will have to deal with both sides of that equation: Ezra and the New Republic confronting Thrawn’s return while Ahsoka and Sabine attempt to find their way home.

‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 Is Going Bigger

If there’s one message Lucasfilm seemed determined to send at D23, it’s that Season 2 won’t simply repeat what we saw the first time around.

Thrawn has returned. Ezra is home. Ahsoka and Sabine are stranded. Baylan is pursuing something connected to one of the strangest pieces of Force mythology we’ve ever seen. And Anakin Skywalker is somehow still part of Ahsoka’s journey.

Disney

The first season spent a lot of time putting those pieces into position. Season 2 finally looks ready to start moving them.

And thankfully, we now know exactly when we’ll get some answers.
