Every Disney fan has that one attraction they hope never changes, but according to Disney Imagineering, change has always been part of Walt Disney World’s story.

Whenever Disney announces a new land, an attraction reimagining, or the retirement of a beloved experience, fans inevitably find themselves divided. Some welcome the next chapter, while others worry that pieces of Disney history are disappearing forever. Now, Walt Disney Imagineering is pulling back the curtain on how those difficult decisions are made, and why preserving Disney’s legacy doesn’t always mean keeping everything exactly the same.
As Walt Disney World continues one of the largest periods of expansion in its history, Imagineers say their goal isn’t to choose between nostalgia and progress. Instead, it’s finding a balance that allows the parks to evolve while still honoring the memories that keep guests coming back year after year.
Walt Disney Never Intended Disney Parks to Stay the Same
One of the biggest misconceptions among Disney fans is that classic attractions were always meant to remain untouched.
According to Walt Disney Imagineering, that couldn’t be further from Walt Disney’s original vision.

Walt famously described Disneyland as “something that will never be finished,” explaining that it would continue to grow, evolve, and improve as long as imagination remained in the world. That philosophy has continued to guide Imagineering for decades, with designers constantly looking for opportunities to enhance guest experiences while respecting the stories that came before.
Rather than viewing updates as replacing history, Imagineers see them as part of the parks’ natural evolution.
The Challenge of Protecting Disney Nostalgia
Imagineers acknowledge that changing beloved attractions is never easy.
Generations of families have built traditions around experiences like Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise, “it’s a small world,” and Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. Those emotional connections are something Disney says it takes seriously whenever updates are considered.

The team explained that every project begins with a simple question: What made guests fall in love with this experience in the first place?
From there, designers work to preserve the heart of an attraction while finding ways to make it more relevant for today’s audiences.

That philosophy has shaped numerous Disney projects over the years, including updates that introduced new Disney characters into classic attractions, refreshed storytelling, improved accessibility, and incorporated advances in Audio-Animatronics technology.
Carousel of Progress Is the Perfect Example
Perhaps no attraction better illustrates Disney’s philosophy than Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress in Tomorrowland.
Ironically, the attraction itself celebrates technological progress and the passage of time, making it one of the few Disney classics where change is actually built into the story.

Disney recently announced that the attraction is receiving its first major overhaul in more than 30 years. When it reopens in 2027, guests will experience entirely new decades following the same familiar family, beginning in the 1960s before moving through the 1980s, the turn of the millennium, and an imaginative vision of the future. The refreshed attraction will also include an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney himself in a new opening scene inspired by his 1964 television presentation of Carousel of Progress.

Even with those major updates, Disney confirmed that iconic elements –including the Sherman Brothers’ beloved song, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” — will remain part of the experience, preserving the attraction’s heart while introducing it to a new generation of guests.
A Park That Continues to Grow
Disney says the balancing act between preserving nostalgia and embracing innovation extends far beyond one attraction.
Across Walt Disney World, Imagineers continue investing in new lands, updated attractions, enhanced technology, and immersive storytelling, all while trying to respect the emotional connection guests have with longtime favorites.

It’s a philosophy that has become increasingly important as Disney invests billions into expanding its parks and experiences over the coming years. Whether it’s introducing entirely new worlds or thoughtfully updating classics, Imagineering says every project is guided by the same principle Walt established decades ago: Disney parks should always be alive, always growing, and always becoming something even better.
For fans, that doesn’t necessarily mean saying goodbye to the Disney magic they remember — it means giving future generations the chance to create memories of their own.
