Imagine grabbing a drink from a hovering Star Wars droid, watching robotic manta rays glide through a lagoon, or seeing lifelike Disney characters powered by technology unlike anything currently in the parks.
It may sound like science fiction, but according to a new behind-the-scenes look at Walt Disney Imagineering, these ideas are already in development.
According to a Bloomberg article, as part of Disney’s ongoing investment in its parks and experiences, Imagineers are building a new generation of robotics and entertainment technology designed to make future attractions more immersive, interactive, and believable than ever before. While many of these concepts are still being tested, Disney says guests visiting its parks could begin seeing more of this technology in the coming years.
Autonomous Aquatic Robots Could Bring Disney Lagoons to Life
One of the most fascinating projects currently in development is a fleet of autonomous aquatic performers designed to move naturally through open water.
Among the prototypes is a six-foot manta ray inspired by Gramma Tala’s spirit form from Moana, along with dolphin-like robotic creatures capable of swimming, diving, and performing synchronized movements. Unlike traditional nighttime spectaculars that rely on fixed infrastructure, these robotic performers are designed to move freely throughout lagoons, opening the door to entirely new forms of daytime and nighttime entertainment.
Imagineers have suggested the technology could eventually be adapted for multiple Disney franchises, making it flexible enough for future attractions and experiences.
A Hovering Star Wars Droid That Delivers Food?
Another concept that immediately caught fans’ attention is a hovering Star Wars-inspired food truck droid being developed with input from filmmaker Jon Favreau.
Rather than serving guests from a traditional kiosk, this floating droid would travel through the land delivering beverages, and potentially other food items, while interacting with guests as part of the experience. Disney describes the concept as entertainment and food service working together, transforming a simple snack purchase into a story-driven interaction.
While no park or opening date has been announced, the technology appears to be a natural fit for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge if it eventually moves beyond the testing phase.
Disney Is Reinventing Audio-Animatronics
Disney is also continuing to evolve one of its most iconic technologies.
Imagineers recently showcased a new projection-based Audio-Animatronic system capable of transforming a character’s face in real time without relying on traditional moving silicone facial components. The technology debuted in an updated scene aboard Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, where a pirate seamlessly changes between human and skeletal appearances using high-precision projection mapping and real-time rendering technology.
The new system reduces mechanical wear while allowing Disney to create more expressive and dynamic characters than ever before.
More Free-Roaming Robots Are on the Way
If you’ve enjoyed meeting the roaming BDX droids, Disney says that’s only the beginning.
According to Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Vice President of Technology and R&D Kyle Laughlin, guests can expect to see more free-roaming robots, expanded mixed reality experiences, and entirely new forms of interactive entertainment as Disney continues developing these technologies.
Rather than waiting for a brand-new park to open, Disney plans to test many of these innovations throughout its existing parks, allowing guests to experience new technology while Imagineering continues refining it.
The Technology Is Being Built for Disney’s Future
Many of these projects are expected to play a major role in Disney’s upcoming park in Abu Dhabi, which Disney has described as its most technologically advanced destination yet.
However, Imagineering has made it clear that innovations developed for that project won’t stay there. Instead, the company plans to introduce many of these advancements across Disney Parks worldwide, meaning guests at Walt Disney World and Disneyland could eventually benefit from the same cutting-edge technology.
While Disney hasn’t announced when, or where, many of these concepts will debut, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the future of Disney Parks will feature more interactive storytelling, smarter robotics, and technology that blurs the line between fantasy and reality.
