It looks like Christmas may be coming back to Whoville.

Universal Pictures

More than 25 years after Jim Carrey transformed into one of the most iconic holiday characters in movie history, a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas is reportedly in the works. While nothing has been finalized just yet, the project is already generating plenty of excitement as original stars and filmmakers eye a return to Mount Crumpit.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to the 2000 live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. While no deals have been finalized, Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise his role as the Grinch, with Ron Howard also in negotiations to return as director.

Howard is also expected to produce the film alongside longtime collaborator Brian Grazer if the project moves forward.

Original Creative Team Could Return

The screenplay is reportedly being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, a trio of acclaimed comedy writers known for their work on series like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Barry, and Veep. The writers also previously worked on the 2003 live-action adaptation of The Cat in the Hat.

Although story details remain under wraps, bringing back much of the original creative team suggests Universal is aiming to recapture the magic that made the first film a holiday classic.

A Christmas Classic That Still Holds Up

Released in 2000, How the Grinch Stole Christmas became a massive box office success, finishing as the highest-grossing domestic film of the year. The movie also earned the Academy Award for Best Makeup, thanks to the incredible transformation that turned Jim Carrey into the lovable green grump.

Over the years, the film has become a seasonal staple for families and continues to be one of the most recognizable live-action holiday movies ever made.

Jim Carrey Previously Said He’d Return — With One Condition

For years, fans assumed another Grinch movie would never happen, especially after Jim Carrey openly discussed how physically demanding the original production was.

The elaborate prosthetics and makeup application reportedly took hours each day, with Carrey previously describing the experience as extremely difficult. In more recent interviews, however, the actor said he would consider returning if modern motion-capture technology could replace much of the heavy prosthetic work, making the role far less physically taxing.

That earlier openness now makes this latest report feel much more realistic.

What Happens Next?

It’s important to note that the sequel has not been officially greenlit, and negotiations with Jim Carrey and Ron Howard are still ongoing.

There is currently no official title, release date, plot details, or casting announcements beyond the reported negotiations.

Universal Pictures

Still, the fact that the project is actively being developed, and that the original star and director are reportedly involved, makes this one of the biggest holiday movie stories of the year.

If everything comes together, audiences could finally return to Whoville for the first live-action Grinch adventure in more than two decades.
