The Disney community is mourning the loss of one of the voices behind one of its most beloved animated characters.

Daveigh Chase, the actress best known to Disney fans as the original voice of Lilo Pelekai in Disney’s 2002 animated classic Lilo & Stitch, has passed away at the age of 35. The news was confirmed on June 17 by her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, who shared that Chase died on June 16 following complications from meningitis and a blood infection that led to sepsis.

Chase brought Lilo to life in the original Lilo & Stitch film and reprised the role in Stitch! The Movie, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Leroy & Stitch, and other projects across the franchise. Her heartfelt performance helped make Lilo one of Disney’s most memorable and relatable animated characters, with themes of family, friendship, and “ohana” continuing to resonate with audiences around the world.

Outside of Disney, Chase was also widely recognized for voicing Chihiro in the English dub of Spirited Away and portraying Samara Morgan in the horror film The Ring. She later appeared in projects including Donnie Darko and HBO’s Big Love, showcasing a wide range of talent throughout her acting career.
