Ever wondered what it takes to build a flying attraction that makes millions of guests feel like they’re soaring across the country? Disney is finally showing us.

Mount Rushmore

Walt Disney Imagineering has released a new episode of its Disney Unscripted series, offering an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Soarin’ Across America, one of the headline experiences created for America’s 250th anniversary celebration. The nearly 20-minute episode takes fans inside the complex process of bringing the attraction to life, revealing everything from aerial filming and music production to ride programming, scent design, and special effects.

For Disney Parks fans, it’s one of the most detailed looks yet at how Imagineering transformed an idea into the newest version of one of Disney’s most beloved attractions.

A Massive Filming Operation Across the United States

One of the biggest focuses of the episode is the aerial filming required to create the attraction’s signature flight experience.

According to Imagineering, creating Soarin’ Across America required extensive planning long before cameras ever took to the skies. Creative teams studied satellite imagery, mapped flight paths, and carefully planned how each location would transition into the next to create the seamless illusion of one continuous journey across the United States.

The attraction showcases a variety of iconic American landscapes and cityscapes, highlighting the country’s natural beauty and diverse geography as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.

The new sign

The Disney Unscripted episode even includes footage from the filming process itself, giving viewers a rare glimpse at the helicopters, camera systems, and production teams responsible for capturing the breathtaking aerial shots used throughout the attraction.

It’s More Than Just a Film

While many guests think of Soarin’ as simply a giant movie screen and moving seats, Disney’s behind-the-scenes feature highlights just how much work goes into making the experience feel believable.

In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, an all-new airborne adventure titled Soarin’ Across America will begin at Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim, Calif., on July 2, 2026, and at Epcot in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on May 26, 2026. Soarin’ Across America will showcase the United States—from sea to shining sea— highlighting a tapestry of urban wonders and natural beauty including sweeping coastlines, vibrant cityscapes, and awe-inspiring landmarks. After filming was completed, Imagineers spent months programming the attraction’s motion system to match each scene. Every movement of the ride vehicle had to be synchronized with the film to create the sensation of gliding, banking, dipping, and soaring across the country.

The episode also explores how Disney fine-tunes timing between:

  • Ride motion
  • Wind effects
  • Show lighting
  • Projection systems
  • Audio
  • Scene transitions

All of these elements must work together perfectly for the illusion of flight to succeed.

The Role of Scents in the Experience

One of the most interesting segments of the Disney Unscripted episode focuses on scent design.

Imagineers explain that scent is a crucial part of the Soarin’ experience, helping guests feel immersed in each environment they visit. Special scent systems are synchronized with individual scenes and are timed down to precise moments in the attraction.

Inside the queue

While guests often remember the visuals and motion, Disney notes that smell is one of the strongest tools available for creating lasting memories, making scent development a surprisingly important part of the attraction’s production process.

A New Musical Journey

The Disney Unscripted feature also highlights the creation of the attraction’s musical score.

Space launch

Soarin’ Across America features a new adaptation of the original Soarin’ music, with composer Bruce Broughton building upon the iconic foundation created by the late Jerry Goldsmith. The updated score was designed to match the emotional tone of the new American-focused journey while preserving the sweeping, inspirational feeling guests associate with Soarin’.
