Big changes are coming to one of the busiest cruise ports in the world.

Port Canaveral has officially approved a massive $95 million terminal upgrade project designed to accommodate the next generation of larger cruise ships and the growing number of passengers sailing from Central Florida.
The project is expected to modernize an existing cruise terminal, expand guest capacity, and improve the overall embarkation experience for millions of travelers in the coming years.

According to reports, the upgrades will allow the terminal to accommodate ships carrying up to 6,700 passengers, a significant increase as cruise lines continue introducing larger and more passenger-heavy vessels. The improvements will be made to an existing terminal rather than constructing a brand-new facility. The project is currently expected to be completed by November 2027.
William Crowe, Vice President of Engineering and Construction for Port Canaveral, said officials are currently evaluating several key areas of the terminal, including transportation flow, ramps, elevators, escalators, terminal square footage, and luggage staging areas. The final design for the project is expected to be completed in August.
As part of the project, the Canaveral Port Authority Board approved a $23 million allocation to PCL Construction Services Inc., which will handle a portion of the overall work.

According to project documents, that work includes replacing deteriorating waterside and landside trench drains that have contributed to sinkholes in active traffic areas around the terminal.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the terminal will receive expanded security screening areas and redesigned guest spaces intended to improve passenger flow during busy embarkation and debarkation days.

Port Canaveral officials say the upgraded facility will feature a refreshed look designed to better welcome travelers.
Vance Gulliksen, Director of Communications and Public Affairs for the Canaveral Port Authority, said the new terminal will include spacious interiors, modern design elements, colorful artwork, and updated finishes aimed at creating a more inviting guest experience.
The upgrades come as Port Canaveral continues experiencing record-breaking growth and prepares for larger ships from multiple cruise lines operating from the port. Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, and several other major operators all utilize Port Canaveral facilities.

The terminal project is just one piece of Port Canaveral’s broader $912 million five-year capital improvement plan, which includes infrastructure upgrades across the entire port.
Another major project already underway is a new 3,700-space parking garage at Cruise Terminal 6, a $93 million investment that is expected to be completed later this year.
With passenger numbers continuing to climb and larger cruise ships arriving in the coming years, Port Canaveral is clearly positioning itself for the future of the cruise industry.

And for Disney Cruise Line fans, that could mean an even smoother embarkation experience the next time you set sail from Florida’s Space Coast.
