One of Disney’s oldest and most important characters is finally making a major comeback.

Jon Favreau’s upcoming “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit” series is officially set to release on Disney+ in 2027, bringing Walt Disney’s original animated star back into the spotlight nearly a century after the character first debuted.
According to Favreau, the new series will tell the story of Oswald “coming out and coming back into the world of Disney.”
That concept feels especially meaningful considering Oswald’s complicated history with the company.

Created in 1927 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit became one of Disney’s first major animated characters before Universal ultimately took control of the character rights — a loss that directly led Walt Disney to create Mickey Mouse shortly afterward.
Disney famously regained the rights to Oswald in 2006, and the character has slowly reappeared in games, merchandise, parks, and shorts over the years.
Now, Oswald is finally getting a major Disney+ spotlight of his own.

One of the biggest details revealed so far is that the series will utilize 2D animation created by The SPA Studios.
The studio is best known for its acclaimed animation work on Klaus, which earned significant praise for blending traditional hand-drawn animation techniques with modern technology.
Hearing that Disney is using stylized 2D animation for Oswald already feels like the perfect creative choice.

Jon Favreau has become one of Disney’s biggest creative collaborators over the past several years through projects including:
- The Mandalorian
- The Lion King
- The Jungle Book
- The Mandalorian and Grogu
Now, Favreau is helping reintroduce one of Disney’s oldest legacy characters to a brand-new generation of audiences through Disney+.

Even though Mickey Mouse ultimately became Disney’s defining icon, Oswald remains an incredibly important part of Disney history.
The character directly influenced early Disney animation, Mickey Mouse’s creation, Walt Disney’s independent studio future, and the company’s storytelling legacy.

In many ways, Oswald represents the “what if?” chapter of Disney animation history. That’s part of why fans have remained so fascinated by the character for decades.
