Big Thunder Mountain just reopened, but the real surprise? You can now see what’s coming next from the queue.

After more than a year behind construction walls, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is finally back in action at Magic Kingdom, and with it comes an unexpected first look at one of Disney’s biggest upcoming expansions. If you know where to look, the queue now offers a rare peek into the future of Frontierland…before it’s fully hidden again.
With the reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom, guests are getting something Disney rarely allows — an early glimpse into active construction for upcoming lands.
From select points in the queue, it’s now possible to see over the construction walls and directly into the areas being transformed for both the upcoming Piston Peak National Park expansion and the future Villains Land.
While Disney is actively working to block these views with taller barriers, for now, the sightlines remain open enough to catch a behind-the-scenes look at the park’s largest expansion project.

Peering out from the queue, several active construction elements are clearly visible.
In the distance, demolition is underway at the former Mike Fink Keel Boats landing, marking another major step in the transformation of Frontierland.
Nearby, large-scale construction materials (including stacks of concrete pipes) sit alongside heavy machinery like a backhoe, signaling that groundwork is actively progressing.
Guests can also spot a growing network of concrete retaining walls, which are continuing to expand deeper into the future Piston Peak footprint.
Adding to the evolving landscape, scaffolding is visible behind the construction walls near Liberty Square as crews begin installing what appears to be a permanent themed barrier.

Although these views are currently accessible, they likely won’t last long.
Disney has already begun installing taller fencing designed to fully obscure the construction areas from guest view.
For now, the elevated vantage points within the Big Thunder Mountain queue offer a rare opportunity to see the transformation in progress — something that will soon be completely hidden as construction continues.

The upcoming Piston Peak National Park is a major new expansion inspired by Cars and designed as an extension of Frontierland.
The land will replace the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, reimagining the space with inspiration drawn from real-world national parks — particularly the Rocky Mountains.

Guests can expect two attractions, including an off-road rally-style ride and a family-friendly experience, along with immersive environments featuring waterfalls, a smaller river, and detailed natural landscapes.
A new original character, Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, will also be introduced as part of the land’s story, tying into classic Disney storytelling traditions.

Disney has also emphasized that sightlines are being carefully designed so that themed “car” elements won’t be visible from other areas of Frontierland, preserving immersion across the park.
Beyond Piston Peak, construction is also underway for the long-rumored Villains Land expansion.

This new area will focus on classic Disney villains and is expected to include two major attractions, as well as new dining and shopping locations.
The project is part of what Disney has described as one of the largest expansions in Magic Kingdom history, with early announcements tracing back to reveals at events like D23 in recent years.

The reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on May 3, 2026, marks the return of a fan-favorite attraction after a lengthy refurbishment that included track replacement and updated effects.

But beyond the ride itself, the surrounding area is clearly in the middle of a massive transformation. Frontierland is evolving, and for a brief moment, guests can actually watch it happen in real time from within the queue.
Would you want to see this kind of behind-the-scenes construction, or do you prefer the Disney magic to stay hidden?
If you’re heading to Magic Kingdom soon, keep an eye out in the Big Thunder queue, because this sneak peek might not be around much longer!
